Star Trexican: Where are the Mexicans in the 23rd Century?

klingon_mexicanIt’s Cinco de Mayo and Star Trek Week, which got me to thinking about all of those great Star Trek characters of Mexican heritage. That rich, bold… er … history of… umm…

Were there any Mexican members of Starfleet?

I consulted the Star Trek Encyclopedia and found an Ensign Lopez whose only noteworthy mention was being dressed down by Lt Worf for doing a poor job (TNG: “Birthright, pt 1”).  Lt Esteban Rodriguez beamed down to the planet in the original series episode “Shore Leave.”  No other mention in his record.

There are all manner of ethnic groups widely represented in Starfleet.  Not a single main character or large guesting role that I can discern as being of Mexican or Hispanic heritage.

  1. Dude, you’re absolutely right. Though, I usually think of B’Elanna more as Klingon than hispanic since that was the heritage the show chose to focus on.
