se7en-horror-movie-poster5. Seven

I know, technically, Seven‘s place in the horror genre is debatable  — could it really be more of a thriller?  Ultimately, I tend to think of Seven as a horror film, based on the sheer gore of the kills, and the viciousness and intensity of the film.  Man, Seven is one messed up film, and the ending shocked audiences everywhere.  Kevin Spacey had a one-two trick that year with this and Usual Suspects, but his performance here holds a special place in my heart.  The direction of Seven (by David Fincher) changed the look of films forever…

texas_chainsaw_massacre_the4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

In fact, a prime example of a film influenced by Seven is the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  Yes, the remake, and not the original.  The 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre shows what happens when you forego the jokes and just make a brutal, intense horror film.  This movie will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time.  And, of course, there isn’t enough love that can be given to director Marcus Nispel, who’s Seven-inspired look on this film set it apart from all other horror films at the time.

thing-movie-poster3. The Thing

Oh man…sci-fi horror doesn’t get better than The Thing.  John Carpenter’s classic has some intense surprises, amazing gore effects, excellent acting, perfect direction.  Of course, I don’t need to tell you how good this film is – if you haven’t seen The Thing, you live a sad, empy life.

halloween-movie-poster2. Halloween

The second John Carpenter film in the top 3!  Yes, this man used to make the BEST horror movies.  The greatest slasher film of all time, starring the greatest slasher of Michael Myers.  Myers is the perfect killer – quiet, ruthless, and the ideal boogeyman.  The perfect movie to watch every October – this movie isn’t just named Halloween, it is Halloween.

exorcist1. The Exorcist

Simply put, the scariest movie of ALL TIME.  Hands down.

What about you?  What’s your top 5? 10? 31?
