Paul’s Horror Flix: Feast III – The Happy Finish (2009)

Feast III: The Happy FinishI don’t know if it’s because it’s the third in the series, or just because it’s not as good as the others, but Feast 3: The Happy Finish, despite it’s title, did not leave me feeling happy.  Ultimately, it’s just not fun – the writers/directors try to one up the tasteless factor, but it’s just not funny anymore, and it all just screams “we’ve seen this twice already.”  In fact, in this film, not one, but two “heroes” show up to save the day, just to bite it minutes later.  It was funny in part 1.  In part 2 it was less funny.  Twice in part 3 was just monotonous.

Feast 3 will pretty much dissapoint anyone who loves the first two.  See, I loved the first one, thought the second one got the fun lost in gratuitous grossness, and now, I feel that part 3 gets even more lost in attempts at humor the ultimately fall flat.

Check out my full review after the jump.

The film starts out with a character having his/her head knocked off, eaten, then crapped out in gory detail by one of the monsters.  Pretty much a sign of things to come.  Taking place right after the end of part 2, we find out that seemingly out of every corner in a town overrun by monsters, there are survivors.  The next 90 minutes or so are basically spent following the survivors as they get picked off one by one by either monsters, or by crazy townspeople.  It’s basically move to new location, monsters attack, escape, rinse, repeat for the entire film.

Ultimately, a prophet (Josh Blue, who’s much less funny in this than on Last Comic Standing) leads them underground to escape the monsters, but freakish underground people and lots and lots of strobe lights are there to greet them!  It was really hard to fllow just what the hell was going on during the five minute long sequence filmed in strobe lights – I figure some people died, but I really couldn’t be sure.  I wanted to rewind it and rewatch it to be sure…but figured it was’t worth the headache.

I’m all for bad taste, gore, and naked women, but Feast 3 seemed to take all these things and figure out how to make them not fun.  Definitely only for fans of the first two, and actually, more specifically, just the second one (you’ll be lost if you haven’t seen it), Feast 3 shows that John Gulager definitely has a unique cinematic eye, given the right material, but needs to be given some decent material to work with.  A straight to video follow-up of a series of movies that only played 2 days in movie theaters, written by the guys who wrote Saw V, is a waste of good talent.

And what the hell was that ending?  Seriously?

If you’re a fan of the series, check it out to finish the storyline.  There are a couple of funny bits worth checking out, even if you won’t like it as much as the other two (isn’t the third part of a trilogy always the worst anyway?).  Otherwise, probably not up your alley.

  1. WOW! they actually made 3?

Over the years I have been able to sit through almost anything but recently I have developed a low tolerance for crap.(Snakes on a Plane, Reno 911: The Movie, Tenacious D’s Pick of Destiny etc..)

I watched the first Feast and it was a turd for more reasons than I can list, I would expect the sequels to follow suit.
