IoM checks out the new Star Wars Cereal from General Mills!

Is it a little silly that I’m writing an article about cereal? Well…probably, but man…it’s Star Wars, and it’s kind of all over the place right now, so I’m just going with it!

General Mills announced on May 4 that they would be releasing a Star Wars cereal this month in limited edition boxes that would cycle out different characters every couple of months. The initial characters are Darth Vader and Yoda, with new characters coming in October (perhaps some Force Awakens characters?), and then in early 2016. It also noted that these are not movie tie-in cereals, but an actual new cereal that would be part of their ongoing line.

Walking around the market nowadays, it’s become evident that someone decided the best way to bring Star Wars back to the minds of the populace was through their stomachs – Jell-O, Lightsaber Ice Pops, Yoplait Yogurt, fruit snacks, and now the cereal (and that’s just at first glance) adorn the aisles of your local supermarket, stealthily increasing Star Wars Mania until the new movie comes out in December.

So how is the new Star Wars Cereal? Well, the box makes it a point of letting you know that whole grain is the first ingredient, there’s no high fructose corn syrup, 9 grams of sugar per serving, and is a good source of calcium and Vitamin D. Does any of that make it actually healthy? Probably not, but maybe it’s not AS unhealthy as some of the other cereals on the market.

As for taste, it’s actually got a different flavor than I expected. Looking at the box, it essentially just looks like a rebranded Lucky Charms – marshmallows (Yoda, Lightsabers, R2-D2, etc) adorn what look to be toasted oats. In actuality though, the non-marshmallow pieces are fruit flavored cereal, so Star Wars Cereal is more like eating Froot Loops with marshmallows in it. If that sounds good to you, then you’re likely to love this cereal. It’s sweet, but man, I really dig it. I like my cereal sweet (even if I eat regular Corn Flakes, I put sugar on them), so this cereal fills that need.

The boxes have little Star Wars-themed games on them that really are no challenge to anyone who’s probably reading this article, but at least game me something to read while I was shoveling marshmallow Stormtroopers into my mouth. It’s a tasty cereal and, if you’ve got kids who aren’t yet familiar with the trilogy (or are and love it), you could do worse than to get them a box of it (and slyly keep the box for yourself).
