I found your podcast though @thistledownjohn on Twitter (I’m @pizzakarin) and am glad I did. I am fairly new to RPGs and have picked up a couple of actual play podcasts to listen to at work. I especially enjoy non-D&D play because I like the wide variety of settings out there (I’m currently playing in an Aberrant game). I loved listening to this one even though I haven’t listened to the story arc thus far. Everyone made it easy to get a feel for the characters, their powers, and the plot. Keep up the good work!

the icon for the orlando event will be revealed soon but i think it will be lady luck her backstory is she used to own a popular casino in the early 1920′s until it got closed down to make room for the new hotel but that became old in the late 1940′s controlled by a mafia member known as fate. in the 1960′s the hollywood universal studios made a choice to build a larger studio and a brand new park. now in 2011 we hear that lady luck and fate return as ghosts to control the park again.

Aron, interestingly enough, the narrator for A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is the guy that did the first three. So many people complained about the narrator of A FEAST FOR CROWS that Martin insisted the bring the other guy back. Surprised he did such a bad job. You should get the ebook and use the built-in text-to-speech feature. It wouldn’t be any worse, by the sound of it.

Russell Crowe is the only thing that piques my interest here. I’m tired of comic book origin stories. We’ve had what feels like a billion of them over the last decade. A reboot of a well-known hero with slight variations on his origin is not enough for me to shell out for this film.

Also, your knew style doesn’t show who’s writing the posts. I assume this is Paul, but what if it’s Aron? I have no way of knowing!

I just saw Rise tonight and HOLY BALLS! That movie was awesome! Sure they had the recognizable “get your hands off me…” line which was a fun nod, bu the “No!” and the black clad police on horseback calling back to Conquest. GOO! What a phenomenal addition to the franchise. It completely washes out the stank that Tim Burton left in my mouth.

What a tough choice! Number 1, 3, 4, and 7 are all neck-in-neck. Traditionally, Conquest has edged out the others though, but I might have to reconsider it now with the excellent Rise. I like seeing the Apes take over and I love Roddy McDowell’s portrayal. Plus those jumpsuits are cool. The music for Escape and Conquest are excellent also. Man, my opinion just continues to fluctuate…I’m actually going to go with Escape (today). It’s one thing to have some weird future, but to show how it all started is way cooler. That opening scene where they take off their helmets is great. It really took the series in a whole new direction too. Plus, killing off the main characters is gutsy and tragic, especially given the “lighter” middle chapter. While the “Mama” ending isn’t much of a surprise like the Statue of Liberty, it’s still powerful, because you know what has to come next…

The original Planet of the Apes is my favorite, because it introduced me to an amazing world and left me with a brilliant ending, that while it seems derivative, really set the bar for a twist ending that is completely valid and shifts the worldview for the characters without dismissing the rich story that was presented before the twist. (Yes, that was one LONG FUCKING SENTENCE.)

While I love the first one, everyone else seems to also. I will go with Conquest of the Planet of the Apes ESPECIALLY if you use the original ending where it was all dark and severe. They tacked on the last bit and you can tell it doesn’t belong. Without, that movie is just a punch to the face of awesome.

I would love to hear you guys discuss how you would reboot either the DC or Marvel universes. Especially Marvel.

There are plenty of comic book movies being made, and there are always cartoons (like Young Justice). Meanwhile prime time television offers The Cape, and a Wonder Woman pilot not good enough to get picked up for broadcast. I can’t wait to hear what the Funnybooks crew has to say about this. I will say this- I’ve never really been a DC guy. The continuity and history has scared me off, except for a few titles. But, if the reboot helps with being more accessible to new readers, I’m totally behind them and I will pick up more DC titles.

Now, unless Jim Lee has at least 6 issues in the can, and I do mean 6 MINIMUM, the delays will scare off new readers and existing readers. Including me.

I am very happy about DC taking the leap to same day digital release. This is the shot across the bow for other companies (cough cough Marvel cough cough) to grow a pair and commit to do the same. It was inevitable, but because DC has been so silent, it’s good that they committed.

I would love to be around for a full universe reboot on the level of the first Crisis, but I doubt if it will happen. I think some of your speculations are things that DC will never do. Thomas Wayne will not permanently come back, they will not retcon Superman’s marriage, etc. Others make sense though. When Dick gives up the Batman mantle I do think Damien will be out.

I am noticing that with all these big events they have been moving time forward a lot.

Some 15 years ago, a friend of mine gave me a stack of oddball comics. He was an older fellow, a pharmacist, and a decided free thinker, so I was eager to see what he had given me. I had only read superhero comics at that point, so I was pretty awestruck by what he found. It was all edgy, odd, twisted stuff, most of it short lived, some of it I was surprised could legally be sold or transported across state lines. Not a superhero to be found. I was entranced by a lot of the titles; the one that sticks out was one of the milder ones, Sin City, which I had never heard of at the time.

I worked for about a year with a woman who used to be a man. First couple times I talked with her, I knew something was different, and had my suspicions. She was a bit too desperately feminine, and awful tall. I had it confirmed one day when my boss at the time went on a rant about how the woman “creeped” her out — my boss was a socially conservative librarian who was indignant that sex change was even possible; also, she used “creepy” for everything she disapproved of, from wearing paisley to engaging in terrorism. Personally, I worked with the transgendered woman with no problems. She was good at what she did – machinery maintenance.

Closest I’ve come to this was sitting in the local game store seeing someone checking out. Long hair, baggy clothes, soft features. I peer. I puzzle. I flip a mental coin and go chick. Then I hear them speak and say out loud “Whoops, got that wrong.” Someone nearby gives me an odd look, so I explain. And they crack up and go to tell their friends, since of course he knew the guy.
