And to answer Hopeless, my vote is that Clark Kent is the true personality. Much like Bruce Wayne is the stunted boy and Batman is the personality of that character, the difference is that even though they are both orphans, Clark doesn’t get any imprinting from his Kryptonian heritage until much later in life. He’s Clark, he’s a Kent. One of the many things that modern writers struggle with is making him emo over his Kryptonian heritage. That’s bogus. It should affect him, but how much of a connection can he really have to a home that, for him, never really existed.

Jesus, someone get me Slagman on the phone and let me write a few good Supes stories.

Either way the Man of Steel should be well worth watching I just hope they find a plausible reason that he can hide his secret identity!

To Hopeless: Clark Kent is the real face of Superman some writers try to say different but it will always come back to Clark.

1) Grave of the Fireflies
2) Princess Mononoke (or anything else by Hayao Miyazaki)
3) Perfect Blue (or anything else by Satoshi Kon)

Grave of the Fireflies and Princess Mononoke are both remarkably mature for “kids” movies. They deal with loss–of innocence, of life, and worse–and they WILL make you cry.

Perfect Blue is a psychological thriller, Hitchcock through the lens of Asian girl bands (with only the slightest hint of Japanese perversion). It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, so I don’t know if it will hold up, but I thought it was important to include something made for adults, to show anime’s range across age groups and genres.

Not sure why you didn’t ask Wayne for his top three during the episode. Maybe next week?

I mean, come on! The New 52 status quo was ALREADY that Batman is estranged from Dick, Jason, etc. How is this even a change? Snyder should have found a way to establish more positive relationships, to make their destruction by the Joker all the more meaningful. If DC wasn’t so obsessed with events and crossovers, he probably could have done this after Night of the Owls.

Bottom line: Paul, Aron, you’re telling me that the Joker won because he destroyed something that Batman valued. I’m telling you that a functional Batman family was never there to begin with. At least not in the New 52.

Maybe you should hop on the show and defend Parker’s honor (or at least Jason Statham’s).

A complete reboot from the start of the prequels? An Old Republic trilogy of movies? The Originals redone after the rebooted prequels so the entire series doesn’t need the Machete sequence to work properly?

You will fall in love with her female characters. They’re beautiful, but let’s face it – that’s not too rare in comics. What is? Belit and Abbie Arcane both radiate soul and intelligence. They’re not just love objects.

Favorite Cover – Mara #1

Unfortunately, Mara is about post-apocalyptic beach volleyball (?!), and I’ll never buy another issue.

Favorite Crossover/Event – Death of the Family

Favorite Hero – Wolverine

Not normally a fan (sign me up for a “Cyclops was right” t-shirt). But Wolverine headlines two of my favorite books, Wolverine & the X-Men, and Uncanny X-Force. He’s the glue that holds them together, and allows Deadpool, Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, etc. to be so awesome.

I wasn’t a fan of Court of Owls, and it irks me that so many people are. Snyder’s Batman just rubs me the wrong way (he’s an overly-confident prick, who lucks his way into saving Gotham). And I never bought into the Court of Owls as a legitimate or interesting threat. Death of the Family changed everything. Now, I can’t wait to see what happens, not to mention Greg Capullo’s stunning art.

Most Disappointing Comic – I don’t see this on your list (though you talked about it during the show, Hickman’s Avengers won). Regardless, my vote is for Animal Man. The story slowed to a crawl during the buildup to Rotworld, and it hasn’t recovered since.

I think I’ve noticed a trend here. Most of these characters are women. Could it be that we’re all secretly yearning for a gorgeous, kick-ass broad who always has our back? (Or in Wayne’s case…a chick named Zeppelin?) As far as that goes, I’m a fan of Kim Rebecki. You could IMMEDIATELY feel the connection between her and Mitch Shelley. Love at first sight, first panel. Also, she’s a gorgeous, kick-ass broad, etc etc.

Have to give him a shout-out, since he’s somewhat obscure here in the Halls of Madness. His work on Prophet and Multiple Warheads is funny, funky, and fucking weird, in the best way possible.

I think the biggest flaw that becomes PAINFULLY apparent during this gift-giving season, aside from not having gift cards, is that Comixology doesn’t even have a wish-list feature. This is another terrible oversight on their part. Being able to set up a wish-list of items that I want that my wife/parents/friends could buy from would be AWESOME.

As great a medium as Comixology is for delivering digital books, it’s seriously lacking in some very basic eShopping features.

The day job I had before the one I have now, we programmed shopping-cart software and if we didn’t have these features in our software offering, we wouldn’t have been able to compete in the market.

So any chance of a comment on the tv linked Arrow comic thats been released?

Rowling admits she could be writing the further wizarding adventures of ‘Harry Potter. HP7 or, Harry Potter 7 or HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS slammed the box office this weekend.

Its a pity that nowadays people would rather idolize a hero that is known for sleeping around, drinking his liver till it regenerates or tears people apart, and not a hero who has manners, respects and treats everyone equally. I’m not saying that any hero with the former traits is not cool, but I’m just saying that heroes of Superman and Cap’s calibre shouldn’t discarded as uncool just because they are from a bygone era where our world’s values were a lot more civilized and sincere.

So what would you like to see in the new Arrow Tv series?

Did you see the trailer they released on Green Arrow tv last week regarding Arrow and Deathstroke fighting, Moira meeting John Barrowman and so on?

And I’m interested to see how they cope, oh I am assuming his blindness is racial in nature otherwise he won’t be that hard for his people to find… well once they get over the agoraphobia bet i got that fear of large airfilled spaces wrong!!!

So Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Huntress, Power Girl, Sloane (yeah right!), two others as yet unnamed but I suspect one of them is Fate comprise the eight heroes issue 0 indicated were the previous generation.

Sloane for me makes me think he’s Stepenwolf, if only because it would then explain how they finally took down the big three, it doesn’t explain the mess of Earth 2 #0 as it wouldn’t have needed the separate creation of those fire pits that was thought created by Batman’s destruction of the Apokolips bases.

Yes leaves alot to be desired hopefully by #5 they’ve let whoever was writing it before #0 ignore #0 or at least the bits which don’t make sense (ie most of it!)

@Darth – Whoa, that is a hard core collection! I was also a big fan of the 3E ruleset but the more I play 4E SR the more it’s winning me over. Where are you in Germany?

@Rob – Thanks buddy, I’m glad you had a good time at GenCon. You’ll have to do some posts on the loot you picked up at the Catalyst Booth so I know where to spend my dollars.

Cap has gained a cool factor from becoming edgier through the Ultimates and Brubaker’s run but that isn’t something I would want to see from Superman. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the pre-new 52 Superman, I just think that values he stands for are sadly outdated. That bothers me because it says something about society and I don’t want Superman to have to conform to that.

I think Superman is suffering from not having a good story arc in the comics. The latest movie outing didn’t help with his public perception as well. The upcoming movie has a chance to show people that Superman can be cool and that he can be a bad-ass without sacrificing his core concepts.

I guess all of this is me really saying that I don’t think Superman needs to change to be cool. Personally I think the new 52 incarnation is a mistake.

But in OUR world, ugh! The right creative team and the right idea will only take you so far, when there are fifteen events and tie-ins to juggle every week.

Between Court of Owls, Rotworld, Zero Issues, Trinity War, and whatever Constantine has brewing, I’ve completely lost faith in DC’s ability to tell a stand-alone story. As a result, I don’t even want to SPECULATE about creative teams–the final product is more about editorial mandate, and whatever event DC has brewing.

That being said . . . Mark Waid pulp Superman please!

All characters are derivative of something else. They may possess varying degrees of uniqueness, but they all will share commonalities with those who have come before. Yes, I created Riptide with the idea of him being a noble-born son of an underwater empire. So is Aquaman. From there, the similarities cease. Riptide’s powers are completely different. His personality is completely different. His motivations are completely different.
So just like all super-strong aliens aren’t Superman, every caped crime crushing crusader isn’t Batman, every spell-wielding super-mage isn’t Dr. Strange, Riptide ain’t no Aquaman.

And no…he doesn’t talk to fish.

Still, for me, swiping character concepts from popular media and filing off the serial numbers makes it easy to hit the ground running when play begins. (Forgive the mixed metaphors, please.) It also provides a good frame of reference for my fellow players, enabling them to tee up little character bits with marginal effort. Besides, the derivative elements are just starting points; my character won’t stay derivative for long.

Anyhow, speaking of derivative … If I played Reverb, I don’t think I could resist drawing inspiration from Vibe.

To Paulie: Not sure I’d read an action-reporters-only book, but I’d applaud the return of Superman Family, which might frequently feature stories from the reporters’ points of view. Heck, I’d applaud the return of any of the “family” line. More giant-sized mags, please

Another point on this thing to is this: A player may be less persuasive than his character. Fair enough. So in a pinch I may let him roll a persuasion check when dealing with another PC, but — here is where we have to be creative GMs again. Say he rolls amazingly well…

Cicero’s rhetoric is brilliant. He raises points that you never considered before. You feel a moment of doubt enter your mind. For a moment your logic seems flawed. You are surprised by how well he speaks — so eloquent. He places the gun on the table in front of you, and your eyes flick to the prisoner and back to the gun. Cicero tells you to kill her. WHAT DO YOU DO?

And here is the kicker — THE PLAYER NOW DECIDES how to act. I know that as a GM your are influencing their thoughts, but you aren’t making them pursue any action that they ultimately don’t want to. If the player decides not to shoot, then everyone should get on with the game. If he does — cool. Maybe the game will go off in a tangent that wasn’t thought out, and maybe that will be fun.

Think of the following counterpoints:

1. If you came up with a brilliant idea, and your character had a limited intelligence stat would the GM stop you and say you can't do that? Of course not.
2. Shooting someone has a fairly immediate consequence. Altering someone's thinking can have long term impact on the PCs free will, shooting them doesn't. And sometimes YES, as a GM you would limit the blatant murder of another PC if it would ruin everyone else's fun.
3. Running away from the player? This is simply silly. Running away from another PC doesn't affect him at all. You are controlling your character.

You lured me with KoR and now I’m hooked on Funnybooks also. Your show’s a fun listen for this fellow who continues to be an avid comics reader but, with a heavy heart, gave up on monthlies a year or two ago.
