indiana_jones_temple_of_doomFoxNews reports that Harrison Ford is ready for Indiana Jones 5.

“The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form,” Ford told France’s Le Figaro magazine. “Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I’ll be very happy to put the costume on again.”

Okay, first, he’ll do a fifth movie if the script is good?  What was his reason for Crystal Skull?  “If the script is mediocre at best?”

Second, what is the likelihood of Lucas turning out a decent script?  3 in 10?  Less?

For crying out loud, George Lucas needs a freaking intervention.

tron3dThe sequel to Tron, Tron Legacy, comes out in 2011.   The preview is awfully sweet.   Gotta admit, I’m giddy about the prospect of another Tron film and, of course, terrified that it might suck.

I have chosen to believe that it will be wonderful, living up to the wonder and awe of the original.

I love the name of the film.  It is strangely appropriate as Tron has a significant, personal legacy in my life.

You see, Tron was the first movie I ever took my Dad to go see.

The year was 1982.  I was 14 years old.

There are a number of key events that stand out in my time with Dad.  A handful of them include:

  • My architect Dad laying on the floor with me building massive forts out of my building blocks;
  • My father teaching me how to sail, calling me his “little sailor;”
  • Turning to find him standing, glowering behind me when I’d snuck out of the house one night to venture down to the pier after midnight – I was 9;
  • Teaching me how to draw space ships;
  • Seeing him standing there in the theater hall when I graduated from college.
  • The first (and only) time he let me buy him a beer; and
  • Taking him to go see Tron.

I remember being concerned that Dad wouldn’t like the movie.

What if he hates it? I wanted to do something nice for him… it’d suck if he didn’t have a good time.

He loved it.

His eyes were wide, soaking up the CG goodness.

“That was exhausting!” He declared while the credits rolled.   He loved the light cycles.  Who doesn’t?

We went to dinner after.  Burgers.  He paid.   Our conversation was all about how wildly cool our Tron experience had been.  Rare, the opportunity to talk to my father about things in which we were both interested.

He grooved to the movie so much that we went and saw it again the following day.

When I watch Tron, I think of Dad warmed by these cozy memories of shared wonder.

Tron Legacy has a lot to live up to.

No pressure.

macross_frontierFrom faint, but fond memories of episodes of Robotech caught ridiculously early on Saturday mornings to rediscovering the series on VHS in High School to playing the RPG in both High School and college, to only recently discovering that there was more to the Macross universe than just Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes, I’ve had a long, on again, off again love for Macross in all its incarnations. Macross is what got me into anime in the first place. That long lasting love was rewarded with Macross: Frontier.

Created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross series, Macross: Frontier contains all the plot and story elements that one expects from this universe. Beyond the awesome jets turning into even more awesome robots and giant aliens there is also a love triangle and, in the end, the universe is saved by song. The only difference is that this series does it all better than any other series has, perhaps including the original. Read the rest of this entry »

"Do or do not watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Decoded. There is no try."

In an announcement released earlier today, The Cartoon Network declared the May 1st launch of Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Decoded

Coming off of the record-setting first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Cartoon Network announced today it will premiere Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Decoded, a full slate of 22 enhanced episodes from season one of the CG-animated series from creator George Lucas and Lucasfilm Animation. Using text windows to provide in-the-moment insights into all aspects of the sweeping galactic conflict-from trivia to background on characters and storylines-Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Decoded enhances each episode with exclusive content created by the Lucasfilm Animation talent responsible for the show itself.

So, essentially this is pop-up videos for Star Wars?  Okay.  I can groove to that. Read the rest of this entry »

dollhouse-gray-hourSpoilers Ahead…

The set up for “Gray Hour” showed F. Murray Abraham-Looking-Guy (I always get Tony Amendola confused with F. Murray Abraham)  meeting with Ms. DeWitt (Olivia Williams) to hire one of the Dollhouse operatives for a job with “special requirements.”  Given Ms. DeWitt’s concerns regarding the risks and the subsequent scene of Echo (Dushku) all tarted up in a hotel lobby crawling over some guys, I was about ready to turn this thing off.  I mean, I’ve about reached my threshhold on the abuse, right?

But Whedon did what he does best.  He switched it up.

Echo wasn’t there to entertain four guys out on the town for a bachelor party.  Nope, it was a cover allowing her to lead a high-tech heist on the high-security building next door.  “Gray Hour” refers to the 60-minute span of time that the high-security building’s detection grid is offline for service. bsg_stwomLast night’s episode of Battlestar Galactica… well… um…

Okay, spoilers after the jump! Read the rest of this entry »

dollhouse_pic5SPOILERS AHEAD…

It’s been a bit rough watching Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse.  The first episode was painful setting up a series that seemed all about the exploitation of young women unawere they were even being abused.  Our nausea was transformed to an ick-factor in the second episode, but since we got to see Dushku hand a guy his ass – not so bad.  Last night, we were given the third episode in the series, Stage Fright.

In episode 3, we meet popstar Rayna (Jamie Lee Kirchner) who is some freakish composite of Beyonce and Britney.  She’s a superstar talent on her way to an even bigger meltdown.  She’s being stalked by a crazed fan.  Enter Echo, who is assigned the role of backup singer, body guard, and BFF.

As ridiculous as this scenario sounds, it actually worked.   Echo inserts herself strongly into Rayna’s world and Dushku affects surprisingly convincing popsinger vocals.  And any opportunity to see Dushku stomp around in fishnets is a worthwhile endeavor.  More after the Jump. dollhouse-dushku_lSome spoilers ahead…

Last week, I shared how disturbing I found Joss Whedon’s new series, Dollhouse.  I found it to be a show about victimization.  Just nauseating, really.

The second episode, “The Target,” while certainly an improvement over the first remains awfully creepy.  And not that good kind of creepy like Vincent Price.  No, the bad kind of creepy like the uncle who hugs you too long.  Or Ernest Borgnine.  More after the jump.

Dig this original piece, Ciphers, featuring The Spirit, Rorschach, and The Question.

I always knew Superman was a Christ-figure, but was surprised to learn he’s a Methodist.  The world is lousy with Catholic heroes, but where are the Episcopal superheroes?  Could be maybe… Batman?

You know you’ve been asking, “Who is Daniel?”

Levar Burton jumps on the Jonathan Frakes bandwagon and throws Stuart Baird under the bus for the stinking heap of crap that Star Trek: Nemesis was.  Can’t say I disagree, though I maintain there were script problems, too.  B-4, indeed!
