iom_movies2009 wasn’t the greatest year for movies.  Highly anticipated flicks didn’t match expectations, and the hype engine managed to overhype a ton of mediocre flicks (I’m looking at you, Drag Me to Hell and Laid to Rest).  Still, if you looked hard enough, you would definitely find some diamonds in the rough, and it’s a true testament to the quality of Hollywood when you’ll notice that half of my top 10 films of the year…were either not released in theaters at all, or were given a very limited release.

Just to set the record straight before we start, films I haven’t seen as of this writing that probably would have made the list are:

Sherlock Holmes, Avatar, District 9, Moon, Fantastic Mr. Fox

Now, let’s get started!

iom_moviesI really enjoyed the first Phobia (aka 4bia) , a 2008 Thai anthology horror film featuring the work of some of the most popular Thai horror film directors.  It had some great ideas, but seemed to suffer from pretty poor special effects and uneven storytelling.

Phobia 2, which actually features five stories, improves on the first film in every way.  The special effects are not only better, they’re actually really good.  The stories are consistently good across the board, and they all actually have a decent amount of scares to them.

phf121409Remember when we leaked to those semi-nude photos of Megan Fox way back when, and how much we were looking forward to Jennifer’s Body because of said photos?  Man…none of that was in the movie.

Not that that was the only thing missing in Jennifer’s Body.  However, had that scene been as revealing as those photos, the film would have at least jumped up a notch in the awesomeness scale.

As it is though, Jennifer’s Body fails at what it sets out to you.  What does it try to do?  Well, by the impression I got from watching it, the cast and crew thought they were making the next Scream, with Diablo Cody playing the part of Kevin Williamson. What they got was more Cursed than Scream.

paulshorrorflix_xmasDuring the month of December, I thought I would brave the task of trying to watch as many Christmas-themed horror movies as I could get my hands on.  Not as easy task, mind you, as I can think of only one Christmas horror flick that people actually like (the original Black Christmas).  Still, there’s gotta be some diamonds in the rough, right?

Guess we’ll find out.

I started my search for good Christmas horror with a film that most undoubtedly was sure to suck – Santa’s Slay, with BILL GOLDBERG (yes, the wrestler) playing Santa!  Read my review after the jump!

paulshorrorflixFrom Christopher Smith, director of Creep (which I haven’t seen) and Severance (which I saw and mostly enjoyed) comes probably his biggest effort as a writer/director, Triangle.  A mystery/suspense in the vein of films of Crono Crimenes and even with a hint of Lost to it, Severance is definitely the type of film you can’t watch while messing with your laptop or doing other things, as you’re liable to miss some of the important key elements on which the film heavily relies.

skeptic-2

The Skeptic is due out Dec. 8th on DVD.

The Skeptic kind of reminded me of that movie Dragonfly.  It’s creepy, and has some relatively good scares, but the ghost itself isn’t out to hurt anybody, or kill people Grudge style.  That’s not really a spoiler for you out there thinking I just ruined everything – the film resides almost entirely on Tim Daly as its sole character, so you know if he dies, the movie’s over.

In The Skeptic, Tim Daly’s aunt has just died, so he moves into her house to take some time away from his wife.  But the house may be haunted, which is something that a skeptic (oh…so that’s why it’s called that!) isn’t having an easy time accepting.  Then he finds out that his aunt may have been experiencing the same things in the house – but is it due to a family history of mental illness, or because the house is actually haunted?

The Skeptic is actually a really good DTV entry in the haunted house genre.  The acting is definitely above average (even with Tom Arnold in it!), especially from Tim Daly (Superman’s voice in the animated series), which is good, because the entire film rests on his performance.  He does a really stand-up job though, and confidentally carries it.  There are some genuinely creepy moments, and actually some scenes that will give you goosebumps.  In addition, there’s actually a good “is he crazy or isn’t he?’ vibe to the film.

If you like a slow burn kind of horror film, without any real special effects, but carried on acting and mood, The Skeptic is definitely the film for you.

HouseOfTheDevil_1

The 70's callbacks stretch into the movie's posters as well.

You know what I’m always saying about over-hyped films?

Why the hell do people like this film so much?  I mean, for the first hour, literally NOTHING happens.  It’s not creepy, it’s not foreboding, there’s nothing really going on other than watching the babysitter run around the house.  I appreciate the call backs to classic 70′s horror in the opening credits and the film’s score, but, seriously, Babysitter Wanted was a millions time better than this.  And I like this film’s director, Ti West, quite a bit.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m  huge fan of the “slow burn” type of horror film.  No one is as patient as me when it comes to that kind of stuff.  But damn…this film wasn’t burning, it wasn’t even simmering – there was just nothing happening.  And then, when something does happen, it’s so over-the-top, it doesn’t even feel like we’re watching the same movie.

I know it sounds like I’m being unfair on the film, but I was really looking forward to this.  Like I said, I love director Ti West (his The Roost is not only a good film, it’s inspiring for amateur filmmakers), but this film just was not working for me.

In the film, Samantha is in dire need of money and ends up responding to an ad for a babysitting job.  She shows up at the house, where a creepy old couple (Tom Noonan amd Mary Woronov) let her know that the babysitting job isn’t so much for a small child, as it is for an old woman.  Still, Samantha needs the cash and decides to take the job, against her better judgement and that of her best friend.  Then, the night takes a creepy turn as strange things happen in the house and the true motives of the couple are revealed.

But…will you care at that point?  And, once the crazy sh*t does start happening, is the final “shocker” ending of the film really going to surprise anyone?

Slow, uneventful, and with not enough payoff to warrant the trip, The House of the Devil may not be horrible (the direction is competent), but it’s sure not interesting enough to recommend.

Scary Madison Productions.

Just those words should kind of scare you – the combination of Adam Sandler and horror films has wielded an unholy union of direct to DVD horror.  But, sadly, that’s the scariest thing about the film.  Because The Shortcut isn’t really scary or funny, despite attempts at being both.

Long story short, The Cottage is a great horror/comedy that fans of films like Shaun of the Dead, Severance, and Evil Dead really need to say.  Hell, any horror fans in general will find a lot to enjoy in this film, with its quirky humor, plentiful gore, and fun storyline.

I came home yesterday from work to find a nice big envelope waiting for me.  I picked it up and looked at it oddly – I hadn’t ordered anything.  I felt around the package a little bit – there was a DVD in it.  A DVD from Full Moon Features?  Could it be?  I tore open the envelope and looked inside…

Skull Heads!

Mother $#&*-in' SKULL HEADS!

Hell to the yes! I’ve been looking forward to this movie ever since it was announced, and knew, the second I had it in my grubby little hands, there was no way I was going through this weekend without seeing it!  So I popped the flick in my DVD player, kicked my feet up, and got myself ready for Charles Band’s newest film…SKULL HEADS!
