Though I was a little disappointed that the movie doesn’t seem related to The Wizard of Oz at all, it actually seems surprisingly good looking!

And yes, that’s Cassidy Freeman (Mercy from Smallville).  The movie is still in post-production, but check out the description, courtesy of ShockTillYouDrop:

Full synopsis: One Morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire – 572 people – walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness. They left behind their clothes, their money, all of their essentials. Even their dogs were abandoned, tied to posts and left to starve. No One knows why. A search party dispatched by the U.S. Army eventually discovered the remains of nearly 300 of Friar’s evacuees. Many had frozen to death. Others were cruelly and mysteriously slaughtered. The bodies of the remaining citizens are still unaccounted for. Over the years, a quiet cover-up operation managed to weave the story of Friar into the stuff of legends and backwoods fairy tales. The town has slowly repopulated, but the vast wilderness is mostly untracked, with the northern-most stretches off limits to local hunters and loggers. In 2008, the coordinates for the “YELLOWBRICKROAD” trail head were declassified. The first official expedition into a dark and twisted wilderness will attempt to solve the mystery of the lost citizens of Friar…and reach the end of the trail.

Being Human“Being Human” is a show broadcast on BBC America.  For those of you who haven’t seen it, the basic premise is that a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost are roommates in a rented house in Bristol.  The main impetus for this arrangement is that each of these individuals is seeking to separate themselves from their supernatural cultures, to live as normal a “human” life as they possibly can.

My initial thought about the show was kind of a “here we go again” reaction.  We’ve all seen plenty of vampire/werewolf/ghost tropes parading through popular media, and I’ve generally been of the opinion this genre has had all the originality wrung out of it long ago.  I’m really glad I didn’t listen to that inner voice as “Being Human” really took me by surprise…in a good way. On September 6, 2009, Dragon*Con attendees attempted to beat the Guinness World Record for amount of people simultaneously dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in a single location.

They had 903 dancers.

This is great.  I mean, anytime that you can get Flying Spaghetti Monster out for a dance is terrific.  But what the hell’s up with Sinead O’Connor?!?

zombies01At GenCon, I picked up the Zombies!!! board game, a game I first played at Fear the Con 2. Zombies!!! is a lot of fun because – well, zombies – and because it has characteristics of some of my favorite games.

There’s the strategy and forward-thinking of chess.  Truly, you need to be considering not just where you want to be in the next turn or two, but also where the zombies will be.  Because each player has control of the zombie horde’s movement – at least a portion of it – you also have to be mindful of what your fellow players may do.

There’s a huge element of player-screwing-player in the game.  Like Sorry! and zombie fiction and film, survivors will at some point turn on survivors.

zombies02There’s a lot to like about the game.  For instance, the game board is built during game play.  At the beginning of each turn, the player draws a city map tile and places it as they like.  The layout of the game world while familiar from game-to-game is always different.

The goal is to be the first to either kill 25 zombies or to make it to the helipad all the while, the board becomes more and more populated with the undead horde.

One of the reasons I bought the game is that I thought my wife – who loves board games, but is not a “gamer” – would enjoy it.

We tried it out last night with another couple.

Ravenous undead mayhem ensued and we all had a blast.

Game rules were easily learned through actual play.  My prior experience with the game gave me an edge on effectively integrating the game cards into my turns.  I observed the other players had difficulty with that, but I know that with further play those tricks will come.

I’m a fan.

Big thumbs up to Zombies!!!

The_Walking_Dead_Wallpaper_1_by_n00bzillaFan favorite zombie comic series The Walking Dead is on its way to series television.  According to Variety, cable channel AMC is inches away from sealing the deal with Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont to bring the show to its network.

Holy crap!

Y’know, I think this would make a great TV series.

The Walking Dead tells the story of surviving the zombie apocalypse.  Like the best zombie stories, it’s not about the undead.  The story revolves around how people react when their lives are at risk and the niceties of civilation have crumbled around you.  When law and order fall away, who can you trust?  What do you value?

Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead published by Image Comics is written in broad story arcs, well-suited to the hour-long format.  The characters are great, demonstrating evolution and change.  If the show’s creators stay true to the source material, this thing will rock.

No word yet on when we might expect to see the pilot.

DevilsTrap_01_MEDI’ve been bachelor boy (newest member of the Legion of Super Heroes) with The Wife out-of-town, so I thought I’d share some of the links I’ve enjoyed this weekend (sorry, no pron).

If you’re anything like me, you are constantly plagued with unwelcome demons showing up at your front door.  I mean, WTF?!?  Can’t these sons-of-bitches call first?  And why do they always show up when Idol’s on? Thankfully, with one of these nifty Devils Trap Doormats inspired by Supernatural, you can restrain the rude visitors from hell and deal with them at your leisure. Read the rest of this entry »

chill-coverBack in the day, one of my favorite games was Pacesetter’s Chill: Adventures Into the Unknown. Originally published in 1984, it was a horror game very much in the vein of the Universal monster movies… Dracula, the Mummy, werewolves, and the Frankenstein monster.  I loved this game.  My players did, too.

The Vampires supplement was awesome.

We played modern era games as well those set in the Nineteenth Century.  They tromped across the Scottish Moors hunting the undead and battled lycanthropes in the streets of Dallas.  Crazy fun.

I had heard some time ago that a  group had bought the rights to the game and were revamping it.  Other Worlds Creations has the property and is currently raising money to fund the release:

OWC is proud to announce the Fundable fundraising effort for Chill 3rd Edition! The link below has all of the information about this fundraiser. If you’ve got any questions not covered there, please post to one of the lists or email me privately at hyrum@otherworlds.cx . We hope you’ll participate so we can finally get the game out. We’ve been working on this for years and, inspired by the fine folks at Pagan Publishing and Arc Dream Publishing, we’re hoping that this fundraiser will tell us if there’s still enough interest in the game to finish it and then print a limited edition full color hardcopy edition of the game.

Curious, this fund raising effort is. Read the rest of this entry »

The Loot

Of the many laudable aspects of the Memorial Day Weekend – time with friends and family, BBQ, swimming in the pool, beer – my absolute favorite is the Half Price Books 20% off sale.  During the sale, they provide an additional 20% off their everyday half-off prices on every item in the store.  It’s a pretty sweet sale that HPB schedules several times each year – Memorial Day, Labor Day, and after Xmas.

I rarely miss a sale.  And with locations all over Texas, there’s a lot to explore.

I scored hard this time around: Read the rest of this entry »

paffenrothThe winner of the Kim Paffenroth Zombie Novel Give-a-way is… Todd Zircher, who has rather grim plans for the coming zombie apocalypse:

Unfortunately, my wife works at a hospital so we’ll be at ground zero for the coming zom-pocalypse. I guess that makes my plan: If you can’t beat them, join them.

Yikes!

Now I feel bad supplying him with study materials making him a better flesh-eating-freak than bad fortune alone will render him.

Congratulations, Todd.  Just remember.  Paul is much more tasty than me.
