Knights of Reignsborough Season 2 is coming…!

Free Comic Book Day is one my favorite geek holidays. All the local comic shops get their groove on and put on a show for the crowds. The objective is to bring new readers to the hobby, energize those of us that read comics, and create new fans of both comics and comics shops.

I am not going to deny the fact that this is a marketing angle. As a lover comics, it is one that I appreciate. It not only exposes new readers to the delights of these stories but also exposes current readers to new types of comics as well. There were well over fifty-two different titles on offer at my local comic shop. They ranged from offerings form both DC and Marvel to a book by Graphic India. This is quite range of tales being told and it made me happy to see such a diversity of options.

Free Comic Book Day has a very festival feel to it. At my local shop, Comic Book World, they put on quite a show. They had the Pickled Brothers Circus there swallowing swords to the amazement of the audience. There were Roller Derby Women signing autographs and showing off their bruises. Also, no Free Comic Book Day would be complete with out a comic celebrity which was filled ably by David Mack.

I had no time to enjoy the day. Other commitments made it impossible for me to spend more time than picking up my comics and seeing the festivities begin. The turnout was good for the start of the day as it took me a bit of time to get through the crowd to pick my five free comics and the one comic I missed from Wednesday. MY haul for the the day was Ramayan 3392 AD, Judge Dredd Classics, The Waling Dead,  Atomic Robo, and Infinity.

I, like everyone else here are Ideology of Madness, am a big fan of Ron Marz. I saw that Ramayan 3392 Ad was done by him which made it a an easy choice. This book from Graphic India is a re-imagining of the myths and legends of India. It plugged easily into my love of mythology of any sort. Marz’ deft hand with story easily introduces the various players in this sprawling drama. He takes the exotic and alien and makes it accessible. Each vignette is illustrated by a different artist with my favorite being Luke Ross. He did the story Seeta. Despite being only three pages, his art captures the energy and vibrancy of the story and makes it jump from the page. The last page is sheer beauty and well worth just contemplating for awhile. I want to pick up this book going forward.

Judge Dredd Classics was a nice little surprise. As the title implies, this is not a new story. Instead, IDW treats us to the Story of Judge Death. It was nice to see this story again as I had not read it in quite some time. The only difference between this and the original was that the art had been recolored. A nice trip down memory lane though I am not sure if it is a good introduction to Judge Dredd though.

I will admit that only picked up The Walking Dead because they had a limit of one per customer. I am not a fan of the zombie genre but was pleasantly surprised by this book. I am unfamiliar with the these characters but found the vignettes to be captivating. From listening to people talk about the books prior, it seems that these may not be stories that are continuing on but have happened in the past. I am more likely to pick up the first trade and start there than to pick up the next issue.

Atomic Robo from Red 5 comics was simply amazing. The story was new to me and very fun. Once again Robo has to stop a runaway experimental robot. The action is fast and clean with the witty banter that I have come to expect from Brian Clevinger. The art us chunky and dynamic. It captures  the feel of a science action story wonderfully. The Bodie Troll story is pure, unadulterated cuteness.

I also picked up Marvel offering, Infinity by Hickman and Cheung. The first part of this book is a an introduction to the coming six issue event of the same name. Cheung’s artwork is superb. The alien feeling of the setting is carried well by his efforts. The story itself was OK. I never really understood what was going on outside of the fact that a planet had the crap kicked out of it and was further brutalized. Oh, and the next planet on the agenda was Earth. there was also a reprint of the Thanos story “Last Flower” and a brief introduction to Marvel’s first Original Graphic Novel, Avengers: Endless Wartime. Overall, I was unimpressed and do not see myself picking up either Infinity or the Avengers OGN.

I also made sure to spend some money to show a little love to my local comic shop and picked up Gail Simone’s The Movement. I have not had a chance to read it yet but look forward to seeing what she has in store for me.

Shocking as it may seem, Aron makes a horrible confession.  If you can bear to listen after having your faith in mankind rocked so hard, you’ll get to hear the guys talk about…

We’re playing a little catch up. Don’t miss issue 10 of Knights of Reignsborough… coming later this week!

…And Funnybooks episode 117!

Historians will designate the time we find ourselves in as A.T. (After Thor). That’s right, we now live in a world with not just a Thor movie, but an awesome Thor movie. All of your Funnybooks hosts saw it and in this week’s episode, we tell you all about it, Free Comic Book Day and – oh yes – the week’s comics.

Due to a shorter turn-a-round time than usual this week, editing is a little rough.

Monday, May 9th is Free Funnybook Day right here at Ideology of Madness!  We’re giving awesome stuff away all freakin’ day!

Give us a call at 972-763-5903 and leave us your feedback!

This Saturday, after you sleep in a little bit to recover from all the awesome of seeing Thor on Friday, make sure to eat your Wheaties and get your ass out to your Local Comic Shop for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!  Yes friends, the greatest day of the year, the first Saturday in May, is HERE!!!!  (well, second greatest day, really, after Free Funnybook Day, coming next Monday!)

All week on IoM, we’re going to give advance reviews of some of the mostly hotly anticipated comics this Saturday and let you know which ones are worth checking out, or which ones might be better left for other fans.

Atomic Robo has become not only a mainstay of FCBD these last couple of years, it’s also become one of the books I look forward to the most every year.  From Red 5 Comics, Atomic Robo tells the story of Robo and his group of Action Scientists that travel the world and go on adventures in science.  Each mini-series jumps to a different time period in Robo’s life with the most current, Atomic Robo and the Deadly Art of Science taking place in the 1930′s.

Atomic Robo‘s FCBD issue takes place in modern times and features Robo as the guest judge at a science fair that gets crashed by…wait for it….DR. DINOSAUR!  Yes, Dr. Dinosaur, who’s been Robo’s most popular enemy with fans makes another hilarious appearance in this pretty awesome comic book.  It’s a short read, but it’s a helluva lot of fun.  Also featured in the book are previews of Red 5′s Foster Broussard and Moon Girl, though the previews are too short to really have much of an opinion on.

Suitable for fans of all ages, Atomic Robo is an absolute must to pick up this Saturday on Free Comic Book Day!

As my buddy (and fellow Funnybooks host) Wayne mentioned earlier today, one of the highlights of this year’s Free Comic Book Day is a “First Look” at Top Cow Comics’ upcoming Artifacts crossover. The crossover, which ties together years of Top Cow continuity, will be written by Ron Marz, with art by some of Top Cow’s finest artists.

Having read the book now, I can say I’m SUPER excited for the upcoming crossover, especially because it brings back, as one of the 13 artifacts, the Rapture, which was the main object of the Universe and Tom Judge: End of Days titles from way back when.  I’d love to see those collected. The Artifacts first look is an original story, with original art, and is a PERFECT primer to the Top Cow Universe.  I highly recommend picking it up this Saturday – after all, what have you got to lose?  It’s FREE!  Plus, you get a preview of Magdalena, which we told you was pretty fantastic in this week’s episode of Funnybooks.

Want a peek at the Artifacts FCBD book, written by Ron Marz with art by Stjepan Sejic?  Look below!  Click any image to see the full page!

We now find ourselves two days away from Free Comic Book Day 2010.  This year’s line-up includes over 30 different titles from many different companies.   Many shops will also include books from last year or other books they just have in stock.  So with this in mind there are going to be quite a few books to choose from and you could miss some true gems if you don’t know what to look for.  Here are the highlights of Free Comic Book Day 2010 from my perspective.

Dark_Horse_SmallDark Horse:  Doctor Solar/Magnus.  These are characters that have been around since the early 1960s published by multiple publishers.  Each character has a truly timeless appeal and I am looking forward to seeing what Dark Horse chooses to do with the property.  So if you are a fan of the characters, the Valiant runs of them, or just want to try something new this is the perfect opportunity to see how Dark Horse is going to treat these iconic characters without risking your hard earned money.

Archaia EntertArchaie_Ent_Smallainment:  Mouse Guard\Fraggle rock flipbook.  I have it on very good authority that this will be a brand new Mouse Guard story written just for FCBD and not a reprint.  If you have not tried Mouse Guard I cannot recommend this highly enough.  It is like the Three Musketeers with mice.  This is also a chance to try out Fraggle Rock since it is not the type of book most of us would typically look at.

Image_SmallTop Cow:  Artifacts. Top Cow has done a good job of using FCBD to promote their big summer events and this year is no exception.  Over the years Top Cow has established a strong continuity around 13 religious artifacts and the powers they grant their wielders.  The Witchblade, The Darkness, and the Spear of Destiny are the most well known of these artifacts.   Top Cow has been criticized for putting out T&A books, and to be honest that is not entirely inaccurate.  They however have a strong story, a fully developed world, and characters that actually have depth.  If they are T&A book, then they are T&A books with a story and really who could ask for more from a comic.

Marvel:  Ironman\Thor. Now that IronManThor_GOLD_smallSiege is ending the Ironman and Thor titles are going in drastically different directions.  This is your chance to catch up on the characters and their status quo of two major marvel characters.   With Matt Fraction and John Romita Jr. working on this FCBD offering it’s bound to be worth grabbing.

RRed_5_SmallED 5 COMICS:  Atomic Robo. This title continues to be a fun ride with a good mix of humor and action.  If you have not had a chance to try it what better time than now when you can do so for free?

Finally Free Comic Book Day is also host to a number of reprints and preview books.  The most noteworthy titles being  Irredeemable #1, Green Hornet  #1, Oni Press Free-For-All!, and Worlds of Aspen.   If you want to see the full list visit http://freecomicbookday.com where you can also search for the closest participating shop.

Ideology of Madness

If we geek about it, we speak about it.
