I know, like you need another jack-wagon writing about how awesome Fear The Con was right? Well, I do this for two reasons. The first reason is that I feel like there are some points that haven’t been brought up that could make for some decent reading. The second reason is that I found out that Paul has IdeologyofMadness business cards and I don’t. My only conclusion is that there must be some kind of ‘post count’ on this site that I have to get to unlock the achievement ‘business card’ (I need to know if Debora has these as well to prove it) so I have to wrack up some more time on this virtual pinball game. Anyway, how was FTC4? Find out after the magical jump….. The drive from Wisconsin with my friend Chris was a seven hour experience, all but 2 of it through Illinois. I remember texting Paul, telling him to have fun at his brewery tour, and that I still had 3 hours of Illinois to ‘defeat’. Illinois did put up a good fight in the last 30 miles or so, when it seemed to realize that we were slipping through it’s grasp, and threw up road construction and 20 mph traffic for about 5 miles, but Chris and I are not new to this rite of pilgrimage, and so we made it to the Quality Inn with enough time to shoot the breeze with all the Funnybooks hosts, sans Wayne who was still at....

While at Fear the Con, I finally had the pleasure of meeting the good folks at Geeky Clean. I’ve had a Twitter friendship with them for awhile now and it was great to put faces with the @name. Geeky Clean is the company that makes boutique soaps with geekish themes. For instance, I bought a bar of the peppermint scented Cure Light Wounds complete with embedded twenty-sider for The Wife. Now she’s minty fresh and free of incidental damage. Win-win. I remarked that some of the filthiest folks I know read this blog (e.g. Jonathan Landreth). Nodding their understanding, the Geeky Clean crew recommended we hook you guys up with some soap. They sent me home with five Geeky Clean care packages. The Deets: Five winners chosen at random will receive a Geeky Clean care package featuring the items imaged above. All you gotta do is one of two things: In the comments, tell us about the geek-centric soap you’d like to see that’s not currently featured by Geeky Clean and – most important – the fragrance that matches it; or Share a geek-stink story with us. One entry per person, please. Items will only be shipped within the United States. Contest ends Friday, April 1 at 11:59 pm Central time. Winners will be announced on the Funnybooks with Aron and Paulie episode releasing on Monday, April 4.

<itunes:summary>On day two of Fear the Con 4 (http://fearthecon.com), your Funnybooks hosts settled down to enjoy some lunch and chat about the con. Since Wayne was otherwise engaged, John Stephens of Thistledown Actual Play (http://www.thistledownap.com/) was employed to fill the role of Fake Wayne (aka False Wayne or Fool's Wayne). We were joined by comedian Mikey Mason (http://www.mikeymason.com) as well as Tim Rodriguez from Dice Food Lodging (http://www.dicefoodlodging.com/), Josh from the internet (http://twitter.com/#!/tikilovegod), and Ideology of Madness contributor James (http://ideologyofmadness.spookyouthouse.com/archives/author/james).
We discuss all manner of topics, none of them comic book related. So, a bit of a departure for this comic book podcast. If you're new to this podcast, please check out our weekly comics discussion episodes (http://ideologyofmadness.com/archives/category/columns/funny-books-with-aron-paulie) or our New Comic Book Day Interviews series (http://ideologyofmadness.com/archives/category/columns/new-comic-book-day-interviews).
This is the first of the audio we recorded at Fear the Con (http://www.feartheboot.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=48). We've got several actual play sessions coming and more commentary. Watch the site for updates.

While enjoying a beer out with The Wife Saturday night, I received a message from a buddy of mine. Deb advised me that Ross Payton and his crew over at Role Playing Public Radio were talking about me. Or at least the subject of my previous two YMH columns concerning the use of social skills against a fellow player’s character. “Have you checked it out yet?” She asked. “Ouch… They’re a bit harsh toward the end.” I hadn’t, so I downloaded it, listening on Sunday while digging out the flower beds. The RPPR folks took the position that grown-up role players settle matters of disagreement through role playing free of a dice mechanic. Player vs. player conflicts should be settled through acting out the drama and perhaps meta-game it a bit to resolution. As you know, I disagree. Character’s have attributes, skills, and other abilities with a measurable value. A player character’s ability to throw a stone has a metric. A PC’s talent at swordsmanship has a gauge His intelligence, strength, and dexterity all have a scale. If you wish to have your character punch another, Ross Payton has no problem allowing you to roll your Brawling skill along with appropriate dexterity and strength bonuses. If you want to charm or persuade your fellow player character, let’s do that through role playing with no dice mechanic to support or enhance the play. My character had a Persuasion skill, a rating that provided him a certain degree of competency in this....

Dour Puritans who fight the forces of supernatural evil with the sheer power of their faith and a vicious scowl are not exactly my cup of tea. If anything, I am a much bigger fan of beefy barbarians who battle dark wizards and seduce lusty wenches. So, when given the choice of Robert E. Howard’s characters, I prefer Conan over Solomon Kane. In fact, I have only read two Solomon Kane stories. I am, however, a sucker for Savage Worlds and will devour pretty much anything that they produce. So, when I went to the prize support table after running my game at Fear the Con 3 (yes, you get a prize for running games at Fear the Con. You regret missing it even more now, don’t you?) my eyes were immediately drawn to the Savage Worlds of Solomon Kane Travelers’ Tales book. The book is just over 30 pages long and has about the same dimensions as a magazine. It contains three complete adventure scenarios set in Solomon Kane’s world of supernatural darkness. The stories echoes tales that are familiar from the real world. The first involves the Uffington Dragon and the apparent return of the beast that inspired it. The second is a tale of a Frankenstein style mad scientist. The final story features Kublai Khan and his secret city of Xanadu. The book ends with several sample characters that players can use should they not already have Solomon Kane characters or if they want to try a....

I have enjoyed the terrific honor of gaming with Chris Mais at each of the three Fear the Cons. He played school teacher Peter Badger in my zombie game the first year and reprised the role in the second year sequel to the game. Fear the Con 3 saw my first opportunity play in his game. Chris ran ESCAPE INTO WHITE MAN’S PLANET, a game in the style of the blacksploitation films of the 1970s such as SHAFT, SUPER FLY, and even the more recent BLACK DYNAMITE. Chris used the Savage Worlds system for his setting’s mechanics. The pulp nature of Savage Worlds made things flow smoothly and in cinematic fashion. Shortly before he started, Chris shared that it had been in excess of five years since he last ran a game. I think I’d have pee’d myself had my first game after such a hiatus been a con game. Chris ran his game masterfully. Without a doubt, this was the most irreverent, offensive, and outright hilarious game I have ever played. Chris rocked this thing hard. He was blessed by some amazing talent around the table who came to the game with the intent of working towards a great game. Rarely have a seen so many players focused on EVERYONE’s good time – including the fun of the GM. Chris tickled us and we tickled him and each other. My ears hurt from all the laughter. Of his game, Mais said, “It turned out to be not unlike the....

Sometimes you just want to play with giant robots blasting each other to smithereens. That is exactly what I got to do when I was given the rare opportunity to not only play test a new game before it was fully developed, but also to do so with one of its creators. The game that I’m speaking of is Iron Tyrants and the creator is Luke Myer of the Podge Cast. Iron Tyrants is a game of tabletop miniatures battles that he has been developing with his partner Adam Pinilla for over a year. This game has a number of remarkable traits. The first that it is exceptionally fast paced. We were able to resolve a four player, eight Tyrant game in just over an hour, a length of time that would be necessary to play just a round or two in a game like Battletech. The rules are also exceptionally simple and intuitive. We only needed Luke to walk us through a round or two of combat before we had all of the core concepts down and were essentially able to run the game without his aid. As simple as they were, however, the rules were neither boring nor limiting. Like many RPGs and CCGs these days it is a game of exceptions. The core rules are simple but each Tyrant has certain abilities that allow them to break these simple rules. Key to these abilities is the concept of Overload. Essentially, Overload represents pushing a Tyrant past its....

At Fear the Con last week, I had the good fortune to play in Ross Payton’s Age of Masks Wild Talents game. Age of Masks is a setting not unlike that of Watchmen. It is a grim and gritty modern era world where those wearing the cape of the superhero are anything but heroic. Remember Miller’s Dark Knight Returns? Then you can imagine the world Payton painted for us. The game employs the Wild Talents system. It’s a nifty, streamlined system that were it not for it’s dice mechanic, I’d like rather a lot. Here’s an excerpt from a great review of the game over on RPG.net: The heart of Wild Talents is the One Role Engine. It does what it says on the tin: it tells you everything you need about an action based on a single roll. It’s a die pool game, wherein you take your statistics (Body, Coordination, Command, etc.), add them to your skills (Swordplay, Chemistry, Brawling, etc.), and roll the resultig number as a pool of ten-sided dice. Unlike similar die pool games, you’re not looking to beat a target number–you’re looking for dice that show the same result. The number of matching numerals is the “width,” and the actual numeral is the “height.” For instance, if you roll a five-die pool and get 3, 8, 3, 3, and 2, then you’ve got a 3×3 result: three instances (width) of the number three (hight). You can never roll more than 10 dice, because you’re guaranteed....

Recently, I had the great fortune of attending Fear The Con for the third time in a row. I’ve been told that GenCon is like going to a class reunion where everyone is like you. Well, my graduating class was only 48 people, so I suspect Fear The Con is much more like my actual class reunion. You know everyone (by appearance if not name) and everyone knows you. Each year, I get to know a few more people a little bit better and I look forward to it as much to catch up with them as to sit down and game for 24 hours in a two day period. This year I had the opportunity to play several excellent games, a couple good games and one decent game. Over the course of the weekend I was able to play four new systems that I was interested in, including the much anticipated Iron Tyrants, created by Luke Meyer and Adam Pinilla from The Podge Cast. I also ran a game for the second year in a row. This game was a homebrew “system” I created based on the lives of the Klokateers, the numerous faceless individuals who work to support the greatest band in the history of ever, Dethklok. I put quotation marks around “system” because I hardly think that a four stat system using one die merits the term and because of the abysmal way in which it ended up failing me.
Four out of five hosts agree, Fear the Con 3 in St. Louis rocked! For the first time, the four of us met face-to-face. Tim, Wayne, and Jonathan are just as great guys as you’d think they are. Truly, excellent fellows to call friends. Paul was sorely missed, but I think we’ll get him to the next one. Something that surprised me at the con was how much Funnybook love was shared. Many people pulled me aside telling me how much they enjoyed the show. I talked comics with lots and lots of new friends. I cannot begin to tell you how amazing it was!

Slicing the throats of Nazi sniper’s, I settled on my battlecry: “I accept your surrender.” Our lieutenant forgot to call in the artillery.
Best. Wing. Night. Ever! Seriously, a terrific turn out tonight at the pre-Fear The Con mixer. Tons of the best people you ever wanted to chat with all right under one roof with copious amounts of wings and booze in ready supply. I cannot begin to tell you how much fun this was. My inability to describe it is largely due to the fact that I had a considerable amount to drink. The bar bill reads a bit like this: A glass of scotch, five glasses of bourbon, and two Irish Car Bombs. I have to document the evening now as I may not recall it in the morning! The best part of the drinking was Jonathan Landreth buying them. Hoo buddy, good stuff. Thank you, Jon-Boy! I enjoyed cigars with an awesome crew of dudes and had some righteous comic discussion with Noble Bear and others. By far, I was stunned at how much love Funnybooks got this evening. Many people came up to comment how much they enjoy the show. Truly, a very humbling experience. The brilliance of Fear the Con is WWWN. This mixer allows folks who’ll be spending the next two days together playing games the opportunity to break the ice. It sets the tone for the rest of the weekend. In terms of gaming and company kept, FtC is the best con around. If tonight’s festivities were any indication, FTC3 will be the best yet of this convention. NOTE: I took a ton of pics....

As I write this, it is half-an hour from World Wing Night, the social event kicking off the Fear the Con 3 activities. Today, my traveling companion James and I ventured ‘cross this great nation of ours from Texas to Saint Louis. We have secured ground transportation, lodging at the con hotel, and even enjoyed a little BBQ. We lunched at Bandana’s where our server, Francisco, recommended the Wet Bandana. I believe this may have been something like what I paid 1000 pesos for the last time I was in Juarez. Francisco also spent some time reviewing the various “sauces,” stating that for something really spicy – well – he had that “in the back.” St. Louis, what a welcoming, exotic place. 30-minutes to Wing Night.
There are those who believed it’d be a cold day in Hell before Luke Meyer returned to another Fear the Boot event. You may have noticed, there’s been a lot of snow this winter… Heard on Twitter yesterday, Luke Meyer, formerly of Fear the Boot and currently of The Podge Cast, announced that he would indeed be accepting the invitation from FtB’s moderating host Dan Repperger to attend Fear the Con 3. He stated: “”Excited to report I will be attending Fear the Con 3. Woot!” When asked about his plans for the event, “I’ll be running copious amount of Iron Tyrants.” Iron Tyrants is the miniature wargame Meyer is developing with frequent collaborator A.
At GenCon, I picked up the Zombies!!! board game, a game I first played at Fear the Con 2. Zombies!!! is a lot of fun because – well, zombies – and because it has characteristics of some of my favorite games. There’s the strategy and forward-thinking of chess. Truly, you need to be considering not just where you want to be in the next turn or two, but also where the zombies will be. Because each player has control of the zombie horde’s movement – at least a portion of it – you also have to be mindful of what your fellow players may do. There’s a huge element of player-screwing-player in the game. Like Sorry! and zombie fiction and film, survivors will at some point turn on survivors. There’s a lot to like about the game. For instance, the game board is built during game play. At the beginning of each turn, the player draws a city map tile and places it as they like. The layout of the game world while familiar from game-to-game is always different. The goal is to be the first to either kill 25 zombies or to make it to the helipad all the while, the board becomes more and more populated with the undead horde. One of the reasons I bought the game is that I thought my wife – who loves board games, but is not a “gamer” – would enjoy it. We tried it out last night with another couple. Ravenous....

I can’t believe I haven’t posted this any earlier! The tradition of any hunter is to display the trophies of the kill, evidence of victory in the wilds. The same is true of the con-goer. Half the fun is bragging about the haul. Last year when I went to Fear the Con, I was on a mission to obtain FUDGE Dice. Which I snagged. For FtC2, I was hunting Burners. The Monster Burner and The Magic Burner for Luke Crane’s Burning Wheel game system, that is. Just like the FUDGE Dice, I’ve been unable to find them here in DFW. Gamer’s Ground returned as Dealer for the con. I quickly snatched up the Monster Burner, but was informed that they were unable to get a hold of the Magic Burner for the show. Gamer’s Ground had books at the con that I have never seen anywhere else. Amazing titles such as Shaintar and Slipstream. I was drooling. Sadly, they weren’t games I was hunting. Later, perhaps. Crushed, but not shaken from my goal, I found a decent deal on eBay. I won the auction and it is on its way to my doorstep now. For running a game at Fear the Con 2, I was awarded the rule book for Don’t Rest Your Head a game I played at FtC2. Sweet! I read about half of it on the plane-ride home. Can’t wait to run it. Once again, Polymancer provided comp copies of their roleplaying game magazine. I’ve never seen....

The very last game I was supposed to be in was a session of Dread: The Last Hurrah. I’d been looking forward to Dread since the moment I had registered for it on the Warhorn site many weeks ago. The problem was that it was in the last slot of the last day of the con. A long slot. A four hour slot. Knowing I wasn’t going to be able to give it my best, I bowed out I sat down with James and Josh, my Texas peeps, and chillaxed a bit. Then Chris Hussey came over, “Hey, me and Pat found a box of Zombies!!! Wanna play?” That sounded great, but my brain was rapidly turning to mush. “How long a game is that?” “About an hour.” “Done!” James, Josh, and I all sat down with Chris and Pat (FtB hosts) for a rousing bout of the Zombies!!! board game. I’d never played it before. It’s pretty cool. The players actually build the game board as each turn goes by, drawing a tile and placing it on the board. With each tile comes a certain number of zombies and before long, you can really screw your fellow players. Obviously, a game for me! I’ve already written about how much I have enjoyed Chris Hussey, but Pat was a real surprise. He’s often quiet on the Fear the Boot mics. I found him to be delightful company. He was a joy to share an evening with (and a hooker, but....

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the spectacular food prepared for us all weekend by the fine ladies of the Kitchen Kill Krewe (not their official designation, but shouldn’t it be?). Food was hot, tasty, and inexpensive. Seriously, all con food should be as good and affordable. There were several standout items on the menu. Julie Hussey, Chris’ wife, provided baked goods. If I grok a rightness, she has a baking company back home. And wow! I wish it were local, ‘cuz her food rocked. She prepared carmelitas (sp?), which were rather like a cookie bar with caramel and chocolate and cookie dough… and they were a critical hit! I mean, Arduin Grimoire stuff here, man. Body split in twain! And her muffins? Get out! Brief aside: I’d been trying to make an “I-buttered-your-wife’s-muffins” joke to Chris, but it seemed rather classless. Fortunately, Chad did it during the Succession Wars game so I didn’t have to! Yet another community service provided by the hosts of Fear the Boot. Stacey, who coordinated food service, made crazy awesome chili. Now then, I’m a native Texan. Here in the Lone Star state it is considered the eighth deadly sin putting beans in chili. After all, we Texans have enough hot air without putting beans in our chili. No lie, when our brand new priest from Missouri entered a bowl of his own red into the church chili cook-off, we made him cry with all the mocking. That’s how serious my fellow....

After Saturday’s morning games wrapped up, Fear the Boot provided a live podcast. This is the element I felt was missing from last year’s convention, thus a very welcome addition this year. It was great to see the guys all bantering amongst each other. Additionally, they made the audience the fifth host providing a microphone for us to both ask questions and answer them. I really wanted to go up and be all douschebag news-blogger guy and ask some jerky question like: “When did you stop beating your wife, sir?” In this crowd, though, the question would have been: “When did you stop LARPing, Chad?” The topic of the podcast was how to prepare for running a con game. There was some awfully good advice provided there and ought to be helpful for next year’s newbie GMs in their prep. The show ran long and I had to run to my next game, so I didn’t get to hear when they expect to drop the episode. Soonish? In the short slot, I jumped into Mikel Matthews’ JFK era supers game utilizing old school Marvel Super Heroes RPG rules. The adventure had our heroes fighting Ushanka wearing Red Gorillas and, oddly enough, the Statue of Liberty. Mikel is an over-the-top GM providing the players with unique character voices, demonstrated actions, and sound effects all of which perfectly fostered the feel of those bygone days. It was pretty cool getting all up in the Statue of Liberty’s guts and all.

Sleep deprivation had absolutely no impact on the Battletech players running their game at the table across from our Savage Ghostbusters game. Yet another Chris Hussey game (YACHG), it was packed with twelve players. Hussey had ‘em pumped. So much so that that at the beginning of each round, they all shouted: “Fear the Wind, Fear The Boot!” I’ve never played Battletech before in my life. Nor have I ever been particularly interested in the game. Witnessing the enthusiasm of Chris’ players, I now very much want to play. Of course, it needs to be old school FASA. Cuz that’s just how I roll. Everyone I talked to about that game had nothing but the most positive things to say about the experience. More, they all had glowing remarks about Chris. I’ve heard the same kind of things from people who played in his games at GenCon. Clearly, Husey’s got a talent for this stuff. Brother can chuck some dice. It’s almost a religous experience gaming with Chris…

Day 2 of the con got off to what I would characterize as a rather groggy start. Many of the con-goers went to see a midnight showing of Watchmen at the conclusion of Day 1′s activities. You’ve never seen so many sleep deprived gamers! As much as I wanted to, I chose not to go see the movie with the gang. The film’s almost three hours long. After having been out late Thursday and all day gaming Friday and more gaming Saturday? I really didn’t want to feel like the walking dead while I was playing the walking dead. So, I was lights out and covers over my head by one AM Saturday morning while the preponderence of my fellows were at the show. The affect was felt both at the beginning of Day 2 and at the day’s end. Most notably, players were late to games for which they had registered. The first game of the day I was in, Savage Ghostbusters, started a half hour late due to tardy, sleepy players.Savage Ghostbusters (the Ghostbusters setting run with the Savage Worlds system) was game mastered by Josh Thomson, who’s also in my local gaming group. Set 20+ years after the end of the Ghostbusters movies, a career in Ghostbusting ain’t what it used to be. Our characters were all recently out of high school working for a franchisee with questionable taste. Our pink jumpsuits evidence thereof. Our Ecto-mobile? An ice cream van. Imagine the Ghostbusters theme played in annoying....

In Friday’s third and final slot, I ran the sequel to the game I ran last year: “…And a Little Child Shall Eat Them.” It’s a zombie setting in which the zombie apocalypse breaks out first amongst the worlds children rendering them fierce predators with supernatural strength. Imagine, a toddler with the strength to tear a car door from its hinges. Worse, that toddler is hungry… and strained peas ain’t gonna do the trick. We call this type of zombie a Growler. Their bite is poisonous. Surviving an encounter with a Growler, but bearing a bite renders the survivor a shambling horror all its own. These are the more traditional, shuffling zombies that we all know and love. We call them Moaners. Friday night’s game took place one year after the events of last year’s game. The survivors have been holed up in a bunker some 30 miles away from the sleepy town of Calhoun, where all this began for them. Resources are tight. In fact, food, water, medical supplies, ammunition, etc. – all are scarce commodities. In their “safe hide-a-way” the players learn they are matter of weeks from exhausting the last of their food. Civilzation has crumbled. No one’s coming to the rescue. No organized government is apparent. Other than a few other such safe-houses communicating via shortwave radio, it would be easy for the survivors to believe they were all alone. Good news burst across the radio just a day ago… A scout team from another safe....

After wrapping up my turn in Don’t Rest Your Head, I moved over to my next game, Succession Wars. Succession Wars is an eighties era, out-of-print number from now-defunct FASA. It’s a turn-based strategy game combining elements of territory grabs (ala Risk) and player negotiations (e.g. Diplomacy) with a healthy application of Battletech backstory applied. Succession Wars has some crunchy rules, and they were a little overwhelming for this newbie. Fortunately, the game was enthusiastically reffed by Chris Hussey. The table full of experienced players, who – while otherwise bent on my utter destruction – were remarkably instructive. Lucky me, I drew House Liao which is the most challenging territory to play as I was given to understand (and have since observed). I got my ass handed to me. It was a whole lot of fun – and surprisingly quick to learn. I realized most of my mistakes early on. Largely due to the carnage raining down ‘pon my head. Live and learn, I guess. Or just learn. The enemies of House Liao were not so concerned with the royal family continuing to “live” in the traditional sense. Lots and lots of fun.

Sweet fancy Moses, I’m tired this morning! Fortunately, coffee and little chocolate donuts have swept in for the rescue! Yesterday was an unrelenting day of gaming goodness here in the greater Saint Louis area. Games started at 11:30 AM and pounded on for twelve hours. The con’s being held at Memorial Hall in Saint Charles, the same venue as last year. The difference is that we’ve got more space in 2009. At the first Fear the Con, we had just the upstairs portion of the hall. Now we have the basement and the upstairs area. It’s a ton of space. And we’re using it! I arrived on-site at eleven o’clock, immediately checking out the dealer’s corner. I had hoped to pick up a couple of Burning Wheel books. I was 50% successful. I snagged the Monster Burner. No love on the Magic Burner. The dealer guy said that their distributor was out-of-stock. The dealer, Gamer Ground, fella has a corner set up in a room down the hall from the main gaming area. His little-bitty area there is better than most gaming stores in DFW. He had books in stock that I have never seen in print. Sean Patrick Fannon’s Shaintar (which I have been drooling over), Slipstream (drool, drool), and the new Necessary Evil Explorer’s Edition among many others. Oh, and everything is 15% off retail. The folks in St. Louis really have it sweet with such fantastic support from their game stores. Envious. Much. My first game to....

I had a terrific time at last night’s World Wide Wing Night, Fear The Con’s pre-con social event. Here’s how it works. Gamers. Wings. Beer. Cigars. Brilliant combination. A lot of us gamer types are not the most sociable people in the world despite the fact that we are engaged in a hobby that’s all about talking to one another. One of the guys at Wing Night clarified that you can tell which of us geeks are extroverts. They look at your shoes when they’re talking instead of their own. Wing Night, then, is a terrific opportunity to get everybody talking and familiar with one another. I believe it was key to last year’s successful con and if last night was any indication, FtC2 is gonna rock it hard. I didn’t take a head count, but there were probably 50 or so people in attendance. Fear The Boot’s co-host, Chad, gave a Cigar 101 last night in which he taught folks how to choose, cut, light, and smoke a cigar. I found Chad’s instruction and lecture to be spot on, which concerned me a bit. I am not used to agreeing with Chad! I had an opportunity to visit with Chris Hussey, FtB co-host, and his wife Julie quite a bit last night. They introduced me to my very first Irish Car Bomb (Guinness stout, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Jameson’s Whiskey – Note to wife: James was our designated driver). Mmm-mm-good! Chris and Julie? Them’s good peeps! I also visited....

I’m at the hotel where most of the out-of-towners are staying. It’s the Best Western in St Charles, Mo. It kinda sucks. The FtB discussion forums have seen a lot of discussion about how the hotel botched reservations in advance of the con. I experienced some of that myself. They lost my first reservation. When I confirmed last week, I had to re-book. At the desk today, they had me set for two rooms. Internets work lots better than last year tho. Chad has stated on the FtB boards that they’re using a different hotel next year. Check the image at the bottom. It is a note taped over the peep hole in the door to the outside hallway. It reads: “In backwards. Can see into room but not see out.” How nice of them to let me know about that! That’s service! Of course, now I have no way of knowing if it’s actually a CandyGram at the door or the Land Shark.

I am on my way to the airport to catch a plane to Saint Louis for Fear The Boot’s second year gaming convention, Fear the Con 2. Last year was balls out the best gaming convention I have ever attended. I’ve got high hopes for this year. No doubt, Fear The Con 2 will have a different feel than it’s maiden outing. The larger then life Luke Meyer, who was so much a part of the 2008 event, is no longer associated with Fear the Boot. And while there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth in this regard, is it not said that where there is not a Luke there will be a Hussy. Chris Hussy, that is. I am playing in The Hussman’s Succession Wars game. I’m booked for Christopher Mais’ Savage Retirement, a game about aging superheroes as well as a game of Dread. Been wanting to play Dread for a while now. Also absent from 2009 is Tony Mast and his Fear the Froot basket. Gotta say, Tony fed the gamers last year with healthy snacks. He loaded me up on oranges and apples and bananas. I have never been so regular at a convention before. My colon will miss Tony. Life is about change, though. So despite the absence of Luke and Tony, I know this thing is gonna pop a wicked nut. After all, FtC2 is a three day event this year. A social event, World Wide Wing Night, kicks things off on Thursday....
