It’s been four years since children the world over turned on their parents, devouring their nurturers.

They are predators our children. Cunning. Deadly.

It’s been four years since the dead started walking.

This is the fourth installment of my zombie apocalypse game utilizing the ALL FLESH MUST BE EATEN unisystem rules.

Around the table this time are Tim, Andrew and Paul each from Ideology of Madness’ Funnybooks with Aron and Paulie. John from ThistledownAP.com as well as Chris and Tresi from the Internet are present for this chapter in a world where gone mad for sweet, warm screaming flesh of man.

Opening voice over provided by Gary Layton.

In the days after Serpentfall, a handful of Marines – the last of their once mighty unit – are shipwrecked on Kaijushima… a place you might know better as Monster Island.

Wreathed in mist and veiled in mystery, Monster Island was bad enough during the BIG ONE, when it held cannibal soldiers sworn to kill and die for Hirohito, and savage tribes who worshiped Golyeong, the MIGHTY “gorilla ghost.” After the Serpentfall, who knows what TREMENDOUS horrors might be RISING UP in Monster Island’s jungles, awakened from the prehistoric past?

Ship-wrecked on Monster Island is an actual play recording made at Fear the Con 4.  Players include Comedy Rockstar Mikey Mason, Funnybooks’ Paul, Thistledown AP’s  John, Josh, Nathan and James.

The game uses the Day After Ragnarok setting expansion from Serpent Scales #3: Return to Monster Island.

Day After Ragnarok is set in a world where the allies never won World War II. Instead, Patton dies before the Battle of the Bulge assassinated in Otto Skorzeny’s Operation Walküre. The Nazis, emboldened by this development that they believe signals the new Twilight, are successful in their endeavor to access the arcane powers of the Norse Gods. They summon up Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent.

The end times dawn in 1945.

The Yanks strike back at the world encircling serpent with a nuke – killing Jormungandr, but also ending the world as we know it. The giant snake’s massive body crashes across continents, destroying cities and nations… Magic and monsters enter the world.

And our heroes are ship-wrecked on Monster Island.

Day After Ragnarok is a Savage Worlds setting from Atomic Overmind Press.

Returning to the real world after three days of awesome at Word Wide Wing Night and Fear the Con 4 in St. Louis was brutal for your Funnybooks hosts.  But at least Warren Beatty had a good week., what with winning his rights back to make a Dick Tracy film.  And, hey, Neonomicon ended with a spectacularly unfulfilled promise of elder god junk.  Join Aron, Paul, Tim, Wayne and Andrew as they lament the torture of real world.

(*) None of us could remember how Sin, the Red Skull’s daughter, received her skullish visage.  Our interns reviewed the record and found that Synthia “Sin” Schmidt (aka Mother Superior of the Sisters of Sin) was injured in an explosion while trying to put her father, the Red Skull, into Steve Rogers’ body.  Beyond sounding like the plot of an awesome gay porno, her face was burned rendering her skully.

Sure his feet hurt at GenCon, but Wayne’s refreshed with inserts for his shoes at Fear the Con 4.  He journaled Indy, and by God he’ll journal St. Louis!

Hop on the Wayne Train for an all access pass to last week’s Fear the Con!

The Blogger

I know, like you need another jack-wagon writing about how awesome Fear The Con was right? Well, I do this for two reasons. The first reason is that I feel like there are some points that haven’t been brought up that could make for some decent reading. The second reason is that I found out that Paul has IdeologyofMadness business cards and I don’t. My only conclusion is that there must be some kind of ‘post count’ on this site that I have to get to unlock the achievement ‘business card’ (I need to know if Debora has these as well to prove it) so I have to wrack up some more time on this virtual pinball game.

Anyway, how was FTC4? Find out after the magical jump…..

While at Fear the Con, I finally had the pleasure of meeting the good folks at Geeky Clean.  I’ve had a Twitter friendship with them for awhile now and it was great to put faces with the @name.

Geeky Clean is the company that makes boutique soaps with geekish themes.  For instance, I bought a bar of the peppermint scented  Cure Light Wounds complete with embedded twenty-sider for The Wife.  Now she’s minty fresh and free of incidental damage.  Win-win.

I remarked that some of the filthiest folks I know read this blog (e.g. Jonathan Landreth).  Nodding their understanding, the Geeky Clean crew recommended we hook you guys up with some soap.  They sent me home with five Geeky Clean care packages.

The Deets:

Five winners chosen at random will receive a Geeky Clean care package featuring the items imaged above.

All you gotta do is one of two things:

  1. In the comments, tell us about the geek-centric soap you’d like to see that’s not currently featured by Geeky Clean and – most important – the fragrance that matches it; or
  2. Share a geek-stink story with us.

One entry per person, please.

Items will only be shipped within the United States.

Contest ends Friday, April 1 at 11:59 pm Central time. Winners will be announced on the Funnybooks with Aron and Paulie episode releasing on Monday, April 4.

Standing left to right: James, Aron, Paul, Tim and Fake Wayne. Seated left to right: Second Tim, Josh and Andrew

On day two of Fear the Con 4, your Funnybooks hosts settled down to enjoy some lunch and chat about the con.  Since Wayne was otherwise engaged, John Stephens of Thistledown Actual Play was employed to fill the role of Fake Wayne (aka False Wayne or Fool’s Wayne).  We were joined by comedian Mikey Mason as well as Tim Rodriguez from Dice Food Lodging, Josh from the internet, and Ideology of Madness contributor James.

We discuss all manner of topics, none of them comic book related.  So, a bit of a departure for this comic book podcast.  If you’re new to this podcast, please check out our weekly comics discussion episodes or our New Comic Book Day Interviews series.

This is the first of the audio we recorded at Fear the Con.  We’ve got several actual play sessions coming and more commentary.  Watch the site for updates.

  • Fear the Comedian: Mikey Mason
  • Previewing next year’s con-game… The Quality Inn Expedition
  • Paul is Smooth
  • The Cultural Defining Semantics of Pizza
  • Songs in the Key of Shame
  • Judged by the cleaning staff

Editor’s Note: This is the first of our Fear The Con 4 coverage.  FTC4 kicks off tonight with World Wide Wing Night and continues through Saturday night.  Check back often as the Ideology of Madness crew update the feed with pics, commentary and after game reports.  Now, enjoy episode 2 of Funnybooks Unlimited!

Paul’s afraid.  See, the upcoming FEAR THE CON is going to be one of his first times gaming, and he’s afraid of not only being eaten alive by more experienced gamers, but of ruining their gaming experiences with his lack of knowledge.  Tim gives Paul advice on being a first-time gamer going to a gaming convention, in his usual Tim way.

Then, Paul discusses his children’s book series, The Siblings Scarington, and solicits advice from listeners on self-publishing ideas, then complains about the unreliability of some freelancers.  Anybody looking to break into writing should give this episode a listen!

  • First time gaming at Con, in which Tim offers up sage wisdom
  • Getting published, or self-publishing, in which Paul tries not to drop the F-bomb when talking about children’s books
  • Ragey Red Rant, in which freelancers take your money and don’t understand English

FBU is a monthly special where your Funnybooks hosts talk about anything but comics!  Let Tim and Paul make sweet, sweet love to your eardrums!

In the week prior to Fear the Con 4, Aron gets an iPad2 and speaks of it in glowing terms bordering on the inappropriate while Paul has a lot of explaining to do.  There’s also the Trade Paper Back and Sock Incidents to discuss.  And comics.

  • New Avengers #10
  • Wonder Woman #608
  • Ultimate Spider-Man #155
  • Venom #1
  • Justice League: Generation Lost #21
  • Superboy #5
  • Lil’ Depressed Boy #2
  • Sigil #1

Paul returns this week, but leaves that echo of his behind while we find ourselves lusting after the iPad2 and giddy with the anticipation of Fear the Con 4.  Join Aron, Paul, Tim, Wayne and Andrew for another podcast episode full of comics, and yes, He/She Update Week 3!

  • Annihilators #1
  • Astonishing Thor #3
  • Avengers Academy #10
  • Green Lantern #63
  • Heroes for Hire #4
  • Incognito: Bad Influences #4
  • Savage Dragon #169
  • Thunderbolts #154
