This is the oddest friggin’ thing I’ve ever seen.  For $50, you can rent out the “Batman Suite” at the Eden Hotel in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan…for three hours.  So, clearly, they expect you to go in and have sex, and then leave the Batsheets sticky (actually, crackly after 2 hours and 57 minutes post-coital snuggling).

My main question is…who is this supposed to appeal to?  I mean, at first glance, I said “Hell Yeah!”  But, upon further inspection, I saw little things that made me realize that maybe this wasn’t the Batroom I’d dreamed of having all of my life.  It’s got a little Batmobile (Tumbler) thing on one side of the room that looks like it serves no purpose.  At first, I thought it was a couch…but for who?  Midgets?  Look how tiny the thing is!  Then you’ve got a poster of Batman on the wall – you know, like you can buy at Wal-Mart.  Pretty sure Bats doesn’t hang up pictures of himself in the ol’ Batcave.  The “couch” looks like plastic rods sticking out of the wall with some pillows on them.  Not only that, it’s one of those “sexy” type rooms where you can see the bathtub from the bed…except that the friggin’ BatTV is blocking the view!  And if you look at that third picture again, you’ll see that the bed looks a little flimsy too.

Ya know, I recently watched this video, and ever since I’ve done nothing but dream about what go in my own “Bleak House.”  I’m a big fan of “shelf porn,” you know, those internet sites and articles where people show off the stuff in their offices?  Their bookshelves full of collectibles, their stacks of DVDs, the original comic art on their walls … I love seeing all of it.  I love seeing what inspires artistic people, and what they decorate their inspirational spaces with.  My office is pretty barren right now, but I hope to one day have it decorated with original Knights of Reignsborough art (from Jake Ekiss), and a whole bunch of other goodies.  Still, it’s just one room.

Guillermo del Toro, director of the Hellboy movies and Pan’s Labyrinth, and one of my favorite directors, has a whole house.  I love how, what looks like a mess to some, is completely organized to him.  It tickles me that he has 17th century books sitting on the shelves next to softcover pulp, and first edition classics out in the open, like a comic with frayed edges from being read too much.  It’s funny that the only thing he keeps behind glass are models and toys, and even then, it’s probably just to not lose any pieces, or risk them breaking.  He has a ROOM dedicated to horror, and a hidden room behind a bookcase for fantasy.  Do you guys have shelf porn you want to show off?  E-mail me pics at paulkaponte@gmail.com and I’ll feature them on the site, along with pics of my office!  In the meantime, get some inspiration from del Toro giving us a tour of his BLEAK HOUSE (which you can read more about in this awesome article from The New Yorker).

Thanks to my sister for sending me this one.

Katrina did an absolute number to New Orleans.  The city has recovered in many aspects, but there are still some areas that will never fully recuperate.  Case in point?  Six Flags New Orleans, which has been abandoned since the hurricane in 2005, and has literally been left completely alone (other than taking back a Batman ride that was still operable) since then.  You’ll see in the below video (and more info here, here, and here) that almost everything else remains.  Computers, rides that are completely intact (corroded beyond repair), and restaurants (with equipment) all just…there.  Broken windows and graffiti have overtaken the rest of the park which looks like something out of a horror movie – check out a creepy video filmed at the abandoned park (which looks like it will be torn down for spare parts in early 2011).

Ever ventured to Universal Orlando’s Island of Adventure, and taken a walk through Marvel Super Hero Island?  It’s great to ride attractions and walk through a theme park experience based on some of your favorite comic book characters, but I’ve got to say, I’m a little bummed that, since the opening of Islands of Adventure in 1999, nothing new has opened in the area since 2000′s Storm Force Acceleration and, despite being the comic loving fiend I am, it’s one of the areas of the park I’m least excited about for repeat visits, despite my love for the Hulk Coaster and Spider-Man rides.

Not many folks know that Marvel’s superhero universe wasn’t the original plan for the park, however.  No, the original plans were to make the park heavily themed on the Batman universe, with influences from both the movies (plans began in 1992, before the movies started sucking) and the comics.  Read the rest of this entry »

If we geek about it, we speak about it here at IoM, and Christmas is definitely something we geek about! And you guys know how much I geek out about theme parks…so I’m glad that, even though I live in Virginia and not someplace like Orlando, I still have a Christmas theme park event I can write about in Busch Gardens Williamsburg’s Christmas Town.  Earlier this year though, I had the good fortune of visiting Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  Though not technically a Christmas-themed attraction, there was plenty of snow and even a couple of snowmen to make it the perfect holiday event.

I’ve been meaning to write this review for quite some time now…is Wizarding World of Harry Potter worth the trip to Orlando for Harry Potter fans, especially if you’re already checked out the park?  Check out my full review after the jump! Read the rest of this entry »

Necessity is the mother of invention.

To increase productivity, mankind needed an efficient way to illuminate the night.  So, Heinrich Goebel invented the light bulb and Thomas Edison, needing to be rich, stole that invention.  Guys like me needed to be able to sit through all three Director’s Cuts of The Lord of the Rings back-to-back without a bathroom break, so some genius made the Stadium Pal.

We are a needful people and The Klutz Book of Inventions is here to meet that need.  Perhaps you’re in need of Soundproof Underwear for instance?    The Klutz Book of Inventions is Co-written by Klutz founder John Cassidy and Brendan Boyle of IDEO, they came up with almost 200 never-before-seen contraptions that are brilliant, useful, and ridiculous all at the same time.

This book is hilarious.  The Wife snagged it from me the moment my review copy emerged from the package and was cracking up.  It’s a fun, fully illustrated volume of “162 inventions that do it all!”  Just think how useful this book would have been to Thomas Edison.  162 inventions right there in one book, ready for the stealing.

Sponsored by the good folks at Klutz, Ideology of Madness is hosting a contest to win The Klutz Book of Inventions in addition to a FLIP UltraHD Camcorder.  See details below.

Listened to this morning’s awesome new episode of KNIGHTS OF REIGNSBOROUGH yet?  That’s not the only podcast we’ve released this week!

Monday we dropped our newest episode of FUNNYBOOKS, where, in addition to the best new comic books, we talk about Smallville, Marvel’s new “Point One” Initiative, paying too much for crappy comic books, and the one thing that Tim, Paul and Wayne can all agree on – the one monthly book that’s been consistently good all year.

Also this week was the premiere of our brand new Magic: The Gathering podcast, CARDBOARD CRACK, hosted by Jonathan Landreth and John Anderson.  In the first episode, they make introductions, discuss States, then dive right into discussing Valakut Ramp and its place in the post-rotation Standard meta-game.  Great stuff if you’re into Magic!

Check out these podcasts and more stories here on IoM, and keep listening in every week for new episodes!  Leave comments and let us know what you think of the episodes!

Why does Paul's bar have to be such a dump?

I was out in New Mexico last week and discovered Paul’s bar.

Paul, Paul, Paul.  You might need to spend less money on comics and maybe – just maybe – invest some of those green backs in your place of business.  And hey, what about some respect for the neighborhood? Can you pick up that crap out front?

One more thing, Paul, how in the hell are you going to make any bank selling ice for five cents?!?

Arrr me mateys!

Mrs. Awesome and I recently had the joy of visiting Captain Cline’s Pirate Ghost Ride in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  I’ve been wanting to visit this thing for years (actually, when I wanted to visit it originally, it was Captain Cline’s Pirate Adventure Ride) and have always seemed to miss out on it.  Probably because I don’t visit the beach area much during tourist season, and the ride is only open during that time.

But I happened upon it a couple of weeks while it was actually open, and there was no way in hell I was missing it this time! Read the rest of this entry »
