I’ve missed Primeval. Sure, it’s not like I got into the show from the very beginning…heck, I didn’t really even get into the show until the start of the third season, but I had read about it before then, and was extremely intrigued.  While most shows promise status quo changes that are usually undone a couple of episodes into each season, Primeval has had a major status quo with each season.

While I won’t go too deep into spoilers until the jump, I will say that each season brought about universe altering changes and character deaths that have stuck with the show.  I got so used to American television that I was really imagining that the changes would be undone within a matter of episodes, but they never were.

After cancellation, fans and the BBC rallied around the show, bringing it back for not just one, but two more seasons, the first of which premiered on January 1st.  Read the rest of this entry »

Now this is some damn exciting news.

Primeval, the BBC series featuring rifts in time that allow both dinosaurs and futuristic monsters to invade modern-day England has been pretty stellar from day one.  As the series progressed, we saw major changed to status quo including the deaths and betrayals of almost the entire main cast, and a change in the past that forever altered the present day.  It’s been a well written show with a ton of great action and fun…of course, that is, until it got canceled at the end of season 3, which ended on a cliffhanger.

Of course, there was fan outcry about the beloved series ending, so BBC America teamed up to co-fund the series with BBC UK, ITV, and ProSieben to bring the series back for two seasons, premiering simultaneously on BBC UK and BBC America starting on January 1st!  Check out the full press release after the jump! This Friday on Cartoon Network is premiere of Young Justice, the new DC animated series that seems like a dream come true.  Why would it be a dream come true … well, take a look at that picture at right.  Not only is Young Justice in DC Continuity (kinda), but the biggest news is that there is no embargo on any DC character, a first for any DC animated series (including Justice League Unlimited, which could use Batman, but not all Batman villains)…which means that any character is fair game, including Batman, Superman, and all of the JLA and their respective villains.

Though the series doesn’t actually start until January 2011, the two-part premiere, “Independence Day,” comes on this Friday, November 26th, at 7pm.  What’s the episode about? Read the rest of this entry »

Note: portions of this review originally appeared in March, 2009.

It’s an absolute travesty that The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series has been canceled in favor of an Ultimate spider-Man reboot.

Remember when we, as fans, compared the live action 90’s Batman movies to the Batman animated series, and the movie, Mask of the Phantasm, and found out they were far inferior?  How the movies seemed to scrap the essence of the character, but the animation perfectly captured everything we love about the character and still bring us something we’d never seen before?  It’s hard to do that with a character as old as Batman, and just as hard with a character a little younger, like Spider-Man.  I loved Marvel’s reboot of Spidey in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic when it first started, but I lost interest real quick.  I don’t know what it was missing…but it was just missing something.  To this day, I still haven’t been able to get back into it, even with it’s manga-styled relaunch.

The Spider-Man movies, and I know many will disagree with me, are sorely lacking.  Even though I loved Spider-Man 2, I can’t go on record saying that it’s the perfect Spider-Man movie (mostly due to the casting).  However, what I will say is that, even though Spider-Man has been blessed with some pretty decent animated interpretations over the years, the absolute best is Spectacular Spider-Man. Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future is a 1987-88 sci-fi/action television series  that ran for 22 episodes in Canadian/American syndication. A toy line was also produced by Mattel, and during each episode there was a segment that included visual and audio material which interacted with the toys.

Christmas of 1987 was ALL ABOUT Captain Power for me.  Captain Power pajamas, action figures, VHS tapes, vehicles…literally, I had just about everything Captain Power that you could get.  I adored the adventures of the Soldiers of the Future, the resistance against Lord Dread and his Bio-Dread Empire.

Shockingly, you can pick up the series on DVD or Blu-Ray (unofficially) at www.captainpower.com.  I decided to give the adventures of Jonathan Power and his team of rebels another shot, remembering them fondly from my youth… Read the rest of this entry »

Every time I think of ALF, the furry little bastard who took the world by storm back in the last 80′s, I think of the Ben Stiller movie Permanent Midnight, about television writer Jerry Stahl, who was on drugs while working on the show.  Weird movie.

Anyway, this week for Good Old Days, at the suggestion of fellow Funnybooks host Wayne, I decided to give ALF another try.  After all, the character was a phenomenon almost the entire time he was on TV.  Surely, this was quality television…right?  Right?

Revealed today on DC’s Source Blog is a peek at some test footage put together for a potential Blue Beetle live action series, and I have to say…it looks pretty sweet.

According to Geoff Johns,

I feel very fortunate to have been a part of Blue Beetle’s introduction way back in INFINITE CRISIS. I’ve said it before, but thanks to the BLUE BEETLE series launched by Keith Giffen and John Rogers with a great design by Cully Hamner, Jaime Reyes rocks. Great character, great story, great look. He’s already appeared in animation, had action figures and right now he’s on my computer in live-action glory. I have an early special effects test that has been floating around of what his armored scarab-suit could look like. This isn’t final. This isn’t greenlit. It’s only a test that was done. We still have a long way to go to see if we can get this off the ground and a lot of people to jump on board…

Let’s hope that those people do jump on board and we see this on our TV screens soon!

fringeLast Thursday, the second season finale of the television show Fringe, “Over There, Part 2,” aired, a rare extended adventure into the alternate universe that Fringe has only briefly given us glimpses of until this point.

Fringe is one of those rare shows where the mythology episodes seem to outshine the “monster of the week” ones.  I find myself typically preferring just the opposite – shows like X-Files, Supernatural, and others seemed to always shine in the one-shots, rather than the ongoing mythology episodes.  Fringe?  Just the opposite – one-off episodes felt like X-Files ripoffs, and the mythology episodes were the strongest of the bunch.

Check out my thoughts on season two of Fringe, and it’s recently aired season finale, after the jump.

Okay, so apparently one superhero show isn’t enough to fill the void left by Heroes being canceled (not that any of us watched it anymore anyway).  In addition to The Cape (check out the trailer for that one here), ABC is throwing their hat in the ring with No Ordinary Family, which kind of looks like The Incredibles, which was kind of inspired by the Fantastic Four, and happens to star Michael Chiklis, who played The Thing in the Fantastic Four movies.  Whew.

I have to say that, while The Cape seems like it could be cheesy fun (I’m guessing it won’t last very long), the production values do seem better on No Ordinary Family, and it looks like it’s less cheesy, but still fun.  Also in the show are Julie Benz (Dexter), and a whole bunch of other people who look familiar but who’s names you probably could care less about.

I can’t decide if this looks really good or really stupid.  Costumes typically don’t work well on television, but there are certain thigns about this I like.  Still…why create a new hero when there are so many better ones out there to choose from?  Oh well…Either way, I’m sure I’m on for the first episode.

Thanks to Uncanny Kev for the vid.
