I’ve done a lot of talking about games on here and feel that I’ve neglected other forms of entertainment.  In an effort to correct this egregious error, allow me to apologize by telling you about a TV show that is something you should be watching.

Justified is a show on FX  that is currently on season 3 and has been approved for a fourth.  Amazon has a pretty good one line description of the show as ” a 21st century wild west show.”  Now, I know you just read wild west there and are getting ready to hit the back button on your browser but hear me out.   I will let you in on a little secret.  If you like Han Solo or Malcolm Reynolds, you will like Deputy US Marshall Raylan Givens.

The heart of the show is Raylan Givens.  He is a powerful yet flawed man played skilfully by Timothy Olyphant.  The trope of the laconic lawman fits easily upon his shoulders for this show while not becoming a straight-jacket allowing for character growth as the show progresses.  His flaws are the more entertaining aspects of Raylan’s character as they play up the very duality of the cowboy/lawman.  He showcases the necessity of having to take up the gun to protect those less powerful, but that to do so requires someone flawed to be willing to do this in the first place.  The opening scene of episode one will easily cement in your mind why the application of the wild west epithet is necessary and shows you that Raylan Givens is a bad-ass.  The entire first season is based on the ramifications of this opening scene.  Raylan is forced to return to his home jurisdiction and face the past he left behind in the great state of Kentucky.  Wait, don’t leave.  I know I said Kentucky but don’t leave yet as I still have not told you how he is like Han Solo or Malcolm Reynolds.  Though, I’m thinking from the little bit I’ve told you so far that I think you are getting the picture though.  The addition of the Kentucky backdrop and the hillbilly ancestry just increases that feeling of a modern-day wild west show.  It provides a way of highlighting the the disparate living conditions present within out country without the heavy-handed condescending tone belittling the backwoods people.  It just portrays them as people trying to survive.

The other strength of the show is that it does not fall into the trap of Raylan being the only bad-ass.  The Marshall’s office is populated with people that are just as skilled and colorful as Raylan.  Instead of a show with a protagonist that must save everyone, this show goes with a slate of capable supporting characters and villains.  This creates a much deeper narrative as you get to see Raylan as viewed by the other deputies in his office.  The villains of show are not given poor treatment either.  Each is given a depth of character and connections to our hero.  This weaves a textured tapestry into the story that is unexpected for a  cable network crime drama.

Justified is a show well worth your time.  All the parts are working together to provide a great hour of entertainment.  It is a show with the skeleton of a crime drama and the soul of western but that geeky core is hidden in there as well.  Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds can easily be seen peeking out from behind the eyes of Raylan Givens when he draws his weapon.  Cowboys are cowboys, even in space.

Oh, I forgot to mention that you can stream season 1 through Amazon Prime or get the DVDs through Netflix or wherever you get your DVDs.

I have a confession to make.

I didn’t like “The Walking Dead” anywhere near as much as everyone else seems to have. I mean, it was a good series, but I felt it dragged, and got unnecessarily repetitive … not good for only 6 episodes. Still, it’s strength (I felt) came from series showrunner Frank Darabont, who also directed the awesome pilot. Well….

This is a quite a bombshell — I have learned that Frank Darabont, the creator, executive producer and director of AMC’s smash hit The Walking Dead, is stepping down as showrunner of the series, which is now in production on its upcoming second season. The news is even more surprising given the fact that Darabont was on hand for Walking Dead’s Comic-Con panel just this past Friday alongside fellow executive producers Robert Kirkman, on whose graphic novel the series is based, and Gale Anne Hurd and appeared excited about Season 2. There is speculation that Darabont might be off the show completely, but I hear talks are still ongoing about him possibly staying on in some capacity. Darabont, who spent five years trying to get a TV version of the zombie saga off the ground and wrote and directed the AMC pilot, hails from the feature world, and I hear that he never quite adjusted to the daily grind of producing a TV series. (more at Deadline)

That’s very curious, really. I’d imagine he’ll stay on in some capacity, as Frank seems to be really into the series. I mean, at one time he fired the entire writing staff in favor of taking more control over the writing. I think Darabont probably just wants to get back into feature directing, and a series just doesn’t allow for that kind of time. I’d expect to see him in a producing job on the series when it finally drops this October.

What say you? Does this give you fears about “Walking Dead” season 2?

Despite my love for BBC’s programming (though I’ve sadly missed the majority of the latest season of Primeval), I’ve never, in my life, seen a single episode of Doctor Who. I’ve always been curious about it, but, for no particular reason, just never got around to watching the damn thing, despite everyone telling me how great it was. I know that the guy who plays the Doctor swaps out every couple of years (though I’m not clear as to if it’s written that way, or if it’s just actors moving on to new things), and that the newest Doctor is played by Matt Smith, who I’m not sure if the fans love or hate (I guess it depends on the fan).

I also know that the last season was run by Steven Moffat, taking over for longtime showrunner Russell T Davies, and that Moffat also created the latest BBC series Sherlock, also something I’ve wanted to see but just haven’t gotten around to.

Well, Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott talked me into watching Doctor Who. The guy (Slott, not Who) camped out ALL DAY to watch the premiere of the show in a movie theater, along with hundreds of other fans. I mean, I can’t think of a single TV show I’d do that for … sure, maybe a new Star Trek show or maybe even the premiere of Supernatural, but even then, only if the cast and crew would be there. But there aren’t a ton of TV shows airing now that, I feel, have earned the die hard loyalty that I, as a fan, would love to give something, and that, at least it appears, Doctor Who fans feel for their show.

So…I decided to give the good Doctor a shot, watching the sixth season premiere (the second season with Smith as the Doctor), part one of the two-part “The Impossible Astronaut.”

Major Spoilers from here on out, by the way…. Read the rest of this entry »

I loved the original Thundercats as a kid.  Though I remember very little about the actual show, I remember mostly the characters.  Lion-O, Snarf, Mumm-Ra…visually, the show is still a viable property, and, given that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out after and was rebooted sooner, I’m surprised that this hasn’t happened until now.

Yup, Thundercats is getting rebooted.  And though there have been many changes (for example, the ‘Cats don’t get stranded on another planet), the core concept appears to be the same, and without the hokeyness that dates so many 80′s TV shows.  The animation looks pretty stellar, and it looks like it’s going to take itself seriously, which is nice.  A Thundercats show with a modern sensibility?  Sign me up.

An official first image of Adrianne Palicki as Wonder Woman in the new TV series based on the character has been released…and…well…

Kind of surprised that this is the direction they’re going with the TV series…you never go “full costume.”  What do you guys think?

So a while back we told you about how the Japanese division of Warner Brothers is working on Supernatural: The Animation, a 22-episode series from Madhouse (Batman: Gotham Knight and Death Note). The project is set to remake the best episodes from the live-action television show, as well as have original episodes that will show adventures Winchester brothers’ childhood (maybe some based on the Wildstorm comic series?), and episodes featuring side characters from the TV show. Jared Padalecki has signed on to voice Sam for all 22 episode of the English dubs, with Jensen Ackles only set to voice the final two (odd choice, there). Supernatural: The Animation is due out in in Japan on February 23rd, with an English US version I’m sure sometime in 2011.

I’m still trying to decide if this is awesome or not, especially with Kansas’ “Carry On My Wayward Son” playing over Japanese dialog. What say you?

One of my favorite horror movies (of all time!) is a television movie named Ghostwatch, which aired on the BBC1 on Halloween in 1992.  It was a  horror mockumentary (like Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity), but was presented as ‘live’ television. It was only aired once in the UK and caused a storm of controversy from folks who thought it was real.  Ghostwatch holds the record for the highest rated single drama in the UK of all time with a peak audience of 11.5 million viewers, and an estimated 30,000 calls to the BBC switchboard in a single hour.

I’m not going to tell you much about the film and ruin it for you, but the basic premise is that a news crew investigates one of the most haunted areas in the UK, and ends up finding more than they bargained for.  Ghostwatch begs repeat viewings, as there’s a ton of hidden stuff in it, including multiple appearances of paranormal activity.

I just discovered that the ENTIRE film is online, in one large chunk, for free, courtesy of Google Videos.  Give it a watch below (you can expand to the full window for easier viewing)!

When you’re done giving the flick a watch, check out its Wikipedia page to see if you missed anything!

One of the most pleasant surprises of last year’s television season was Starz’s Spartacus: Blood and Sand.  It was visually arresting and violent, but also well written and acted, with some great writing.  Who’da thunk that the producers of the Hercules and Xena TV shows would produce such an adult television show?

Well, with main star of the show Andy Whitfield currently battling cancer, the producers of the show decided to move forward with a prequel starring the characters played by John Hannah (The Mummy movies) and Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), which kicks off on January 21st and looks sufficiently kick-ass.  Check out the trailer below.

I’m usually late to the game when it comes to awesome stuff. Case in point? Archer, the super hilarious animated spy show on FX.  I saw the first episode with my wife and she HATED it, so for some reason it didn’t get added to the DVR (I blame her).  However, after the season ended, I caught the entire thing on demand (it’s on Netflix streaming right now) and LOVED every politically incorrect minute of it.  If you read this site and have never seen Archer, go check it out now!  It’s also available on DVD, in addition to Netflix.

Season 2 premieres on January 27th – cannot possibly wait!  I mean, the commercial already has be laughing out loud!
