Source: StarTrek.com “You’ve heard the rumors, and now StarTrek.com can officially confirm it: Star Trek: The Next Generation will be released in high-definition Blu-ray, starting in January with a sampler of several popular episodes, followed by a season-one set to be released later on in 2012, and subsequent seasons beaming down after that. Each of the 178 episodes spanning The Next Generation‘s seven seasons will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p for release in the Blu-ray format and, eventually, for runs on television and digital platforms in the U.S. and across the world. Star Trek: The Next Generation will, as fans know, be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012.” The sampler will include the feature-length version of the series pilot, “Encounter at Farpoint,” as well the fan-favorite episodes “Sins of the Father” and “The Inner Light,” the former from season three and the latter from season five. Not sure I’m on board for the sampler, but I know sales of it will affect the blu-ray releases of the full seasons. If Paramount is smart, they’ll throw in a coupon for the full season sets – then I’m definitely on board. I’m super excited to see TNG on Blu-Ray, especially with new effects and remastered from the original negatives. It’s going to be like an entirely new experience – what say you? Will this be enough to make you guys purchase? Oh, and hey, if you’re a Trek fan, make sure to check out our brand new actual play, Star Trek: Aegean, which just released its first episode here!

Some kick ass movie news today – I compiled the best of the best below! Batman: Under the Red Hood trailer! Man, I’m really excited about this. I really enjoyed the original tale in Batman, written by Judd Winnick with art by the ever-reliable Doug Mahnke, which featured the return of Jason Todd. Even though the reason (Superboy punching reality) has been made fun of to this day, Winnick sure did a heck of a job making Todd a great villain, with clear motives – something I haven’t seen done as well by other writers. DC is adapting that tale into what appears to a be a kick-ass animated movie, featuring the voice talent of Bruce Greenwood, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Isaacs and Jensen Ackles. It’s due out this July. Bad Boys III! http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=65370 It’s just good news after good news today, let me tell ya. I loved the original Bad Boys, but Bad Boys II was even better. Sure, most people hated the fact that it was two and a half hours long, but not me – I loved the hell out of it! Now Martin Lawrence is talking about a Bad Boys III. While I doubt we’ll see it anytime soon (ol’ Michael Bay is working on Transformers 3 first), I think both Lawrence and Will Smith are never better than when they’re in these films. I’ll be there opening day if they do another one. Batman says “Screw you” to 3D! http://www.cinematical.com/2010/04/20/wally-pfister-talks-about-shooting-batman-3-in-3-d/ Thank God! Some stupid Hollywood....

In our big Star Trek giveaway from Trek Week 2, we offered the new Star Trek 2-disc special edition DVD and IDW’s prequel comic trade paper back, Star Trek: Countdown. All you had to do to enter the contest was tell us your recommendation for the Trek sequel. We had many entries and lots of great suggestions such as following up on the Vulcan refugees who perhaps have fallen victim to Klingon exploitation, a re-imagining of the Gorn, and a stern recommendation to fire the writers. The winning entry, chosen at random, was from Jaybee63 who campaigned for the return of certain con-man: Let’s bring back Harcourt Fenton Mudd and somehow associate the green ladies along with the numerous Federal laws that Mudd violates. Plus, add in some Klingon diplomatic emergency so that Kirk needs Mudd’s help to get of this crisis. Harry Mudd? I could get behind that. Plus, there’s always sexy androids around wherever Mudd goes. Congratulations, Jaybee63!

It’s been long confirmed that the writer’s of the new Star Trek film had a hard time figuring out how to include James Kirk Prime (The Shatner) into the new movie, considering he died on-screen in Star Trek: Generations. Sure, William Shatner himself brought him back to life in a Trek novel, but the regular moviegoing public doesn’t really know that. Still, they did find a way and the description of the long-rumoured “birthday message” that Kirk leaves for Spock Prime is now available at Trek Movie. Reading it, I think it’s a shame they didn’t include it. They say it’s because Shatner has a strict “no cameo” policy. But I guess they’ve never seen Fanboys? Or Dodgeball? Did he say no? Did they not ask him? Are they really going to put him in the sequel somewhere? I guess only time will tell … but either way, this scene seems like it would have been a great capper to the film. Sure, Chris Pine did an excellent job, but Shatner would have killed this scene.

So Star Trek blew up in cinemas over the summer and, with it set to be released on DVD this coming week (and blu-ray, for us cool folks), the question has come up many a time as to when Trek might return to its native roots – that is, to say, television. While I don’t think we’re going to see a return to TVland for our beloved Enterprise (or any Federation ship, honestly) in the near future, I’d venture to say we might see one eventually. Probably after a third movie is released in theaters, I’d imagine. Paramount knows they’ve got a good thing going with the movies, and the way those corporate types work is that sometimes they’d imagine that TV (especially in the case of Trek, which was killed by poor TV shows) will dilute the experience of the movie series, which is their cash cow right now. Still, with Trek‘s hopefully inevitable return to television, what new can be brought in that we haven’t seen before? I’m sure we don’t want to just see alternative universe portrayals of The Next Generation, or Deep Space Nine. Do we need a new series about exploring new life and new civilizations? The stationary space station thing has been done before, the “lost in space” thing has been done before…what’s left? Star Trek Undercover: Okay, so the title is stupid, but I’m serious about the premise. The deleted scenes for Abrams’ recent Trek movie show a much more militaristic, almost terrorist....

I’m a pretty big Trek geek. Had you asked me yesterday how many pilot episodes there were of the original Star Trek television series I’d have said two. And would have argued any other answer provided with a sneering superiority. And then I read this press release announcing yet another unaired Star Trek pilot had been found (remember when they “found” THE CAGE?): HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (November 12, 2009) – “When we first discovered the original film print existed, we jumped at the chance to give STAR TREK fans the opportunity to add this never aired pilot to their collections,” said Ken Ross, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Home Entertainment. “It will be a real treat for fans to see and hear how it all could have begun.” Origins A film collector in Germany acquired the unique print several years ago and recently brought it to the attention of CBS Home Entertainment and its distributor Paramount Home Entertainment. The physical 35mm film print was transferred to HD video by Magic Picture Home Entertainment GmbH before it was transported to the United States this past September. Restoration As the next step, the Digital Restoration Department at CBS spent hours carefully color-correcting the video and carrying out a frame-by-frame dirt removal process in an effort to provide fans with the best picture quality possible. The Pilot Presented in three parts with 1970s-style act breaks, the alternative pilot offers an entirely different version of Captain James T. Kirk’s opening monologue, music....

So the big news last week was that the long awaited Star Trek MMO will be released in February 2010. Hot damn, right? Now, the big question… will your system run it? And more important, will mine? According to Star Trek Online in a FAQ updated this week: System Requirements OS: Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit) CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz or AMD Athlon X2 3800+ Memory: 1GB RAM Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 / ATI Radeon X1800 / Intel HD Graphics Sound: DirectX 9.0c Compatible Soundcard DirectX: Version 9.0c or Higher HDD: 8GB Free Disk Space Network: Internet Broadband Connection Required Disc: 6X DVD-ROM Well, CRAP! I’m running 1.6 Ghz on my laptop. And I’ve got some Intel video nonsense that doesn’t sound like it’s near cool enough to handle the game.
Sure, seeing Spock in the recent Abrams’ Trek film was all sorts of awesome, but what about another adventure starring the original crew, or even some of the cast members from the various TV shows? What is Star Trek: Of Gods and Men? Only one of the most elaborate fan films I’ve ever seen! Star Trek: Of Gods and Men stars Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols (Uhura and Chekov of the original series) and Alan Ruck (Captain John Harriman of the 7th Trek feature film, Star Trek Generations) along with Grace Lee Whitney (Janice Rand of the original series). Joining them are Garrett Wang (Star Trek: Voyager) and Ethan Phillips (Star Trek: Voyager as well as Star Trek: The Next Generation); Cirroc Lofton, Chase Masterson and JG Hertzler (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Gary Graham and Crystal Allen (Star Trek: Enterprise), Herb Jefferson (Battlestar Galactica) plus Tim Russ (reprising his role as Tuvok from Star Trek: Voyager), who also directed. The same team that created the hit “Roddenberry on Patrol,” currently in DVD release, and also directed by Russ, is producing the webisode mini-series. Set in the original series timeline, the story picks up twelve years after Kirk’s death, in an alternate universe where we get a much darker tale, and once familiar and welcome faces take a sinister turn! You’ll never see a fan film with this much interaction from the original cast, and with such high production values! The entire film can be seen for free on its official....

J.J. Abrams’ re-think of the Star Trek universe was many more times Romulus shatteringly awesome than even the most optimistic Trek geek ever hoped. It re-energized an aging property. Everyone outside (and many within) fandom believed it could not be done. Making more than $380 million in worldwide box office, the film was successful in kindling the flame of Trek-love and guaranteeing a sequel and many more romps through the Trek universe. The DVD hits store shelves on November 17th. Because we geeked to the movie so hard, we’re offering you the chance to win a copy of the 2-disc special edition DVD complete with digital copy. But wait! That’s not all. We’re also throwing in a copy of IDW’s terrific prequel comic Star Trek: Countdown. Countdown tells the story of Spock and Nero fighting to avert the disaster which spawns the events of the film. In thrilling fashion, we are provided the tale of two men from vastly different backgrounds who become allies. We see how allies become bitter enemies. Countdown enriches the enjoyment of the film, but it’s great on its own. One lucky winner gets both the DVD and Star Trek: Countdown. The Deets: All you gotta do is post your recommendations for the sequel in the comments below. One entry per person, please. Winners will be chosen at random. Items will only be shipped within the continental United States. You must be 18 or older to enter. Contest ends Friday, Novemer 20 at 5:00 pm Central....

Battlestar Galactica co-creator Ron Moore who also wrote some of the best TNG and DS9 episodes, was recently interviewed at the New York Television Festival. In hilarious fashion, he riffed on Treknobabble. Harlan Ellison called it Balonium and it existed even back in the TOS days, but TNG took it to new heights. What Moore, and Ellison before him, described is lazy writing. I think it’s what killed the earlier franchise. Once you start taking shortcuts to plot resolution that essentially mean nothing, all the conflict is meaningless. I’m hoping JJ Abrams has paid attention.

This Friday, Star Trek, one of the best movies I’ve seen thus far in 2009, is returning for a limited time to IMAX theaters! Looks like it’ll be showing in 85 theaters nationwide, and the list seems to be pretty good – there’s actually one near me, which I usually take as a sign of a good things, since we never get anything cool around here. If you missed Star Trek in IMAX, I can assure you, there’s no better way to see it. This movie looks actually GORGEOUS on the larger than life (all screens are, technically, but this is larger than that!) screen, and with IMAX sound, you may actually get injured from the awesome. Just warning you. Check out the full theater listing at TrekMovie, the best Trek site on the web.

The Wife and I were watching an episode of How I Met Your Mother last night. One part of the episode dealt with newlyweds Marshall and Lilly putting together their death letters for each other. You know, the letter you leave your loved ones only to be read in the event of your death? The Wife asked, “Why don’t we have death letters?” “I’m putting together a death video,” I answered without hesitation. “Oh?” She adopted that dubious tone she often employs as if bracing herself for some absurd thing I will say. “Yeah,” I answered. “I’m gonna be wearing a Starfleet uniform and leave you a message just like Kirk did for Spock and McCoy in The Tholian Web. Except, my message will be to you and the cat. “Imagine it, I’ll spin around in my command chair and speak to you directly to you via the camera. “Cecil. Suzanne. Since you are playing this tape, we will assume that I am dead and the tactical situation is critical and both of you are locked in mortal combat. It means, Suzanne, that you have control of the ship and are probably making the most difficult decisions of your career. I can offer only one small piece of advice for whatever it’s worth: use every scrap of logic and knowledge you have to save the ship, but temper your judgment with intuitive insight. I believe you have those qualities, but if you can’t find them in yourself, seek out Cecil. ....

It’s no secret, I loves me some Star Trek. The movies, the TV shows, and the comics? All of them I regard with deep affection. The novels though? I’m crazy for the novels. I’ve not read all of them. Hell, I doubt I’ve even read most of them. That would be a full time job. Trek books are the purest kind of brain candy, providing a familiar escape. They offer an easy transition to a far-a-way place that while strange, is populated by friends we’ve known a long, long time. These stories are neither challenging nor threatening. Strangely enough, that is some times a good thing. I love a book that’s in my face, pushing me, agitating me to consider new ideas… even scaring me. But there are times when you need the comfort of a known quantity, the friendly voice of a beloved character. Star Trek books have gotten me through some stressful times. In a lot of respects, these books are a security blanket I clutch when times are bad. And good. I tend to read more Trek in the summer, a time for trashy books. I was at a bookstore once and overheard two guys talking about Star Trek novels. “You read this one?” The guy asked his friend about the latest novel. “Nah,” The friend responded, “I only read the important Trek books.” I laughed at the notion of an important Trek book. Oddly enough, I understood what he was talking about. He was referring to....

Of the many laudable aspects of the Memorial Day Weekend – time with friends and family, BBQ, swimming in the pool, beer – my absolute favorite is the Half Price Books 20% off sale. During the sale, they provide an additional 20% off their everyday half-off prices on every item in the store. It’s a pretty sweet sale that HPB schedules several times each year – Memorial Day, Labor Day, and after Xmas. I rarely miss a sale. And with locations all over Texas, there’s a lot to explore. I scored hard this time around: Max Brooks’ World War Z (I have the audio version. Since it is abridged, I am eager to read the whole darn thing.) Stan Nicholls’ Orcs: Bad Blood (I bought the earlier book at Xmas time) Comic trade paperbacks – Starlin’s Mystery in Space vol 2, Green Arrow: Quiver, Green Arrow: City Walls, Bendis’ Ultimate Power, and Daredevil: Hell to Pay. White Wolf’s Changeling: The Lost Decipher’s Star Trek: The Role Playing Game – Player’s Guide, Narrator’s Guide, and Starfleet Operations Manual (books 1-3). Made out like a freakin’ bandit. Have no idea when I will have time to read all that. But dang! I’ve got lots of stuff to read by the pool. By the way, I’m reading Dresden Files book 4 right now, Summer Knight, a book I picked up at HPB’s after Xmas sale.
I’m a Saint Louis Cardinals fan. Cubs fans receive nothing but mockery from me, Royals fans, even more. Some might wonder why I’m such an ass to people that are fans of different baseball franchises. Why should I care? They don’t know me, the players would leave in a heartbeat for more money if it weren’t for their contracts and it’s expensive. Baseball players get millions of dollars to hang out and play a game, so why give a crap? I’d ask the same about the low, yet unending argument over Captains in Star Trek. Usually Jean Luc Picard and James T. Kirk are the centers for such geeky word exchanges (Which pisses me off since Ben Sisko was easily the best. He had the most soul) It has settled down in recent years, but I have heard the rumblings resurging with the impending release of the new Star Trek movie directed by J.J. Abrams. For some reason, people think this man walks on water, but they obviously haven’t seen Cloverfield or half of the episodes of Lost In all, there have been five Captains (Try to name them all, FULL NAMES with actor names, no peeking, and yes, we are counting Enterprise.) James Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Ben Sisko, Kathryn Janeway and Jonathan Archer. Each has varying degrees of competence and strengths I think for this column, we can lay out everything and you, the reader, can decide for yourself which one is worthy of your worship. James T. Kirk,....

So, apparently because I’m Captain Oblivious, there’s been a viral Star Trek campaign going on involving all sorts of videos and hints that tie into the movie – read all about it here. Over the last few weeks there has been an intricate alternative reality game for the new Star Trek which has been keeping a lot of fans busy sorting clues and even visiting real world locations. TrekMovie has lead the way in reporting on the game’s progress each step along the way, but for some casual observers it has been challenging to follow. The game is coming to a close and there have been some recent new clues and so today we now try to put it all together in our guide to ‘the story so far’ with the Star Trek ARG. What really blew my mind was the end of this article though. Find out after the jump and prepare to poo yourself. Clearly, The Chat Gang’s mission is to warn Vulcan of Nero’s attack, hoping to prompt more evacuations before the planet’s destruction. Their tattoos also indicate that they’re from the post-Romulus 24th century, like Nero. One possibility is that this transmission is actually being sent to the future, arriving during the events of the movie. But I’ve considered another possibility, and was surprised to see other players also have come to the same conclusion. I noticed that we didn’t actually see a definitive shot of the Narada being destroyed at the end of the movie.....

I saw the new Star Trek movie last night. It rocked hard. Seriously, crazy awesome. Casting was brilliant, story was spot-on and the action was ladled in awesome sauce. JJ Abrams, please, please, please say you’ll make the next one. To give you an indication of how good the movie is and how well it will do… My wife, who is not an SF fan and who does not much care for Trek, loved it. She laughed, she cheered, was totally into the film. It won both a die-hard fan who’s been skeptical up until recently, and my non-geek, non-fan wife. This thing is gonna be freakin’ huge. Sure, I have a few issues with the movie relating to continuity. But if you start pulling at those threads the entire sweater comes apart. So best to leave that alone. I will not spoil the film for you except to say that this film completely reboots the entire franchise with a whole new, dangerous, freakishly cool status-quo. Some will argue “not really” since things ostensibly take place in an alternate universe. Let’s face it though, you’ve seen your last TNG movie. These new, fresh faces are the next generation of Trek. And I gotta say… I like it! I’ll have a lot more to say about this one, but I want to live with it for a bit first.

The most disappointing aspect for me about seeing Star Trek last night in DIGITAL IMAX was that there was literally not a single person in costume. I don’t know if it’s fear of ridicule, or just the fact that no one does that anymore, but hell, people dressed up to see The Dark Knight, and I’d venture to say that Batman fans don’t hold a candle to Trek ones in their fanaticism. I was really hoping to see folks dressed up – I enjoy looking at the elaborate costumes. I even brought a camera so that I could take pictures and post them on the site. Oh well. Sorry, to the subject at hand. Star Trek is f*cking awesome. It’s, without a doubt, the most action-packed Star Trek movie you’ve ever seen and will not only please long time fans, but create totally new ones. It’s fast paced, vibrant, well acted and written. In fact, non-die hard Trek fans will find nothing wrong with it. Which is to say that I did – there are some aspects of it I downright hated. Still, the film is THAT good that you’ll look past your nitpicks and enjoy it for what it is – a reinvigoration to the franchise that actually takes into account what happened before. Avoiding spoilers? Well, don’t read after the jump, where I jump into MINOR SPOILER territory. I’ll let you know right now I gave it a 9 out of 10 – it’s a fantastic film and....

With the new Trek reboot now in theaters and (hopefully) set to reinvigorate the franchise, it’s pretty interesting to note that this idea isn’t exactly a new one. While the storyline itself is original to this movie, the idea of rebooting the franchise and exploring the early adventures of the Enterprise crew was actually considered for the sixth Trek movie, The Unidiscovered Country. Ultimately, the film was made with the original crew, and is one of the best movies featuring that crew, but it went through all sorts of craziness before becoming the film we know and love today. After the jump, check out ten facts you may not have known about Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country, the last film featuring all of the core original cast of Star Trek! The original proposal for Trek VI was actually called “The Academy Years,” and featured Dr. Leonard McCoy talking about how he met Kirk and Spock while addressing a group of Academy graduates. “The script shows Kirk and Spock’s upbringing, their meeting McCoy and Montgomery Scott at the Academy and defeating a villain before parting ways. The script would have established that George Kirk, James T. Kirk’s father, was a pilot who went missing—presumed dead—during a warp experiment with Scott. The script is set before the “enlightenment” of the Federation; slavery and racism are common, with Spock being bullied because he is the only Vulcan student. Nurse Christine Chapel cameos in the script’s climax.” (Wikipedia) Walter Koenig actually proposed an idea....

It’s kind of a sad fact, but most fans typically venture into their franchise’s “expanded universe.” Some of the biggest fans of Star Wars haven’t picked up Timothy Zahn’s excellent “Heir to the Empire” series, which (I think) makes a pretty darn good follow up to the original trilogy. A good number of people who watched all seven seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer religiously have probably never checked out the follow up season eight currently being published by Dark Horse Comics. Star Trek has one of the most diverse “expanded universes” out there, between the novels, comics, and games. Very little of it is considered official “canon,” but most of it hasn’t actually been conflicted within the filmed Trek properties. In fact, a good portion of filmed Trek properties actually take their cues from the expanded universe properties. One of the most interesting currently available is the novel series unofficially known as “Deep Space Nine Season Eight.” Read after the jump to find out more! “Season Eight,” is, obviously, set after the events of Deep Space Nine’s finale, “What You Leave Behind.” The official start of the series is the two-part series, Avatar. In the aftermath of a war that brought the Alpha Quadrant to the brink of destruction, Starbase Deep Space 9™ — the galaxy’s nexus of scientific and military intrigue — is once more the flashpoint of impending Armageddon as a surprise attack cripples the station, killing hundreds and threatening the fragile new peace. Colonel Kira Nerys....

That rich, bold… er … history of… umm… Were there any Mexican members of Starfleet? I consulted the Star Trek Encyclopedia and found an Ensign Lopez whose only noteworthy mention was being dressed down by Lt Worf for doing a poor job (TNG: “Birthright, pt 1″). Lt Esteban Rodriguez beamed down to the planet in the original series episode “Shore Leave.” No other mention in his record. There are all manner of ethnic groups widely represented in Starfleet. Not a single main character or large guesting role that I can discern as being of Mexican or Hispanic heritage.
I think IDW may have done more with Star Trek than any other company in recent memory. Marvel did a decent amount, and Malibu had their Deep Space Nine series. Wildstorm seemed like just one big wasted opportunity. However, IDW has literally flooded the market with Star Trek material and produced some pretty interesting stuff, including Assignment Earth (based on the proposed Star Trek spin-off that would follow the second season finale of the same name), and Star Trek Year Four (which was the fourth year of the “five year mission to seek out new life and new civilizations” – the series only made it to 3 seasons). Still, the absolute best Trek series produced by IDW so far, IMHO, is their excellent Star Trek: Countdown series, which successfully bridges the original Trek continuity (and features appearances by many Next Generation alum) to the new movie’s continuity. My only gripe is that the guest stars were wholly from Next Generation, and not any of the other Trek series. Still, IDW has a follow up to the series coming out this July, set in the new continuity! Check out more information after the jump! According to Trekweb.com, IDW publisher Chris Ryall posted in his blog the cover artwork for the second issue of Spock Reflections, an upcoming comic book mini series which is a sequel to the Star Trek Countdown mini series, set in new, post-new movie TOS timeline established by the rebooted continuity, and featuring the Zachary Quinto version of....

The new Star Trek score has a lot to live up to – the scores for all the original movies are all very memorable (some for good reasons, some for bad), and even the TV shows had great scores and themes (I especially love the Deep Space Nine theme). Still, with a changing of the guard and a reboot, we also get a new take on the Trek themes and music from Michael Giacchino. Does the new score live up to the standards set by the ones before it, or does it fall flat when compared? Read after the jump to find out! JJ Abrams has always stated that he was more a fan of Star Wars growing up than of Star Trek (I was too, honestly), so it’s no surprise that the score reflects that a bit. While of course there are throwbacks to the theme of the original Star Trek series, the score emphasizes a new Trek theme that, while not quite reaching the iconic status I think it goes for, is relatively effective. This is the score for an adventure film – there aren’t the military touches of Wrath of Khan, or some of the more epic granduer of some of the later films. The composer, Michael Giacchino, actually won a Grammy (and was nominated for an Academy Award) for his work in the Pixar flick Ratatouille, and also did the score for The Incredibles. His background is relatively family-friendly, including flicks like Sky High and The....

Yesterday we chatted about the film scores for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan. Today? Everything else. Without a doubt, the weakest of the Trek scores has got to be the music for what is the most popular films of the franchise – Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. You know? The one with the whales? Right. The funny one. Composed by Leonard Rosenman, the same fella who gave us the soundtrack for Bakshi’s 1978 Lord of the Rings, the music for Trek IV is just plain hideous. It is an unexpected, unwelcome departure from the grandeur of Horner and Goldsmith’s earlier themes. Rosenman has no success in creating a memorable sound. One blessing, it’s a short album. About 35 minutes or so, and that’s including the two 80′s synth-rock pieces performed by the Yellowjackets. Yuck. It’s amazing to me how the most commercially successful of the films can have such a rotten soundtrack. Even more alarming is how the two worst films of the series have fantastic scores. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a dismal, terrible failure of a film. Shatner usually gets the lion share of the blame for the steaming heap of crap, but I lay the blame at the feet of Paramount Pictures. They chose to plow ahead with production of a film during the writer’s strike and make a film heavy in specil FX without Industrial Light & Magic. The one good thing they did, though? They brought back Jerry....

If this is what it takes to get into Starfleet…I’ll never be joining that mission to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before. …sigh…play the games here and let me know how you did!

Like a rutting Vulcan deep in the throws of Pon Farr, I have a burning passion for the music of the Star Trek films. From the ethereal movements of Star Trek: The Motion Picture to the explosive tracks of The Wrath of Khan, from First Contact to, yes, even Nemesis, I love the music of Star Trek. Let’s open them hailing frequencies and talk about some Trek music shall we? Star Trek: The Motion Picture Arguably, the soundtrack is the most remembered thing about Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I am awfully fond of TMP, but many find the film too cerebral. But the music? First in the franchise, composer Jerry Goldsmith was tasked with creating a memorable sound while at the same time leaving a footprint as indelible as Alexander Courage’s theme from the TV show. Jerry Goldsmith knocked that one out of the park. Goldsmith’s Main Title from TMP is one of the most memorable movie themes ranking with Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It went on to become the touch point for subsequent Trek films as well as the main theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation. That wasn’t the only music from the score to be utilized in TNG. No, Klingon Battle would go on to become the foundation of Worf’s Theme. Another standout in the soundtrack is Ilia’s Theme, a somber, romantic piece evoking the soulful passions of the character and her tragic end. The overwhelming tone of this soundtrack is wonder.....

As a fan of the Star Trek franchise – and in keeping with Star Trek Week here at IoM – I thought it might be prudent to do a few entries on Star Trek. Since I am just as much a whore as any other geek, I’ll use this opportunity to talk about some of the enemies faced by the many Captains. I’ll save the cliché “which-captain-is-the-best” entry for next week. Not every enemy stayed an enemy, and not all members of a single race were necessarily bad. We don’t want to think that Roddenberry was ultimately racist in the things he created. Klingons were bastards at times, but Worf was fun, and they weren’t all trying to bring down the federation. The real question posed here though is, “are there any real enemies?” I don’t mean the Klingons or the Ferengi, I mean the real dangers to the Federation. The Borg: First encountered by Picard in The Next Generation, the Borg are a highly advanced hive mind with the goal of the assimilation of every living sentient being in the universe. They have the ability to adapt to any energy weapon, which means they are difficult to kill in large numbers. But are they evil? I’m reminded of the Cybermen from Doctor Who when it comes to the Borg. Nothing more than a (race? group?) of entities attempting to achieve their idea of perfection. In many ways, they are right about their assumptions about other sentient beings. They....

Because we’re all sick of that damn “square butts” commercial from Burger King, what would be better than to turn on your TV and see this? So what does your local Burger King have in store for you this month? Read after the jump to find out! Though officially it starts Monday, most Burger Kings have already started their big Star Trek promotion, which includes Kid’s Meal Toys, a special kid’s meal food item, a marketing campaign, and, best of all, new Star Trek glasses! Trek Glasses I think I enjoy glasses more than any other kind of fast food tie-in item. I mean, toys are fun and all, but the simple fact of the matter is, kid’s meal toys just are not going to be as good as “real” toys, by nature. But glasses…well, even a crappy movie (Batman Forever) can have some sweet looking glasses. I picked up the 1st in the new BK Star Trek series (there’s one a week), Kirk, yesterday, and these things are awesome. They don’t just hand you the glass and send you on your merry way – these glasses all come in individualized boxes that look fantastic. They really put a lot of effort into these, and it shows. The Kid’s Meal Toys There are sixteen toys total (four per week), so that’s a lot of damn Burger King food. My vote is to wait for someone to post the set on Ebay. Anyway, I’m not entirely impressed with the toys –....

…because I am. I realized this recently, and I’m kind of ashamed of it. I LOVE Star Trek, but sometime during Deep Space Nine, my inner fanboy started to retreat into the darkness, replaced by so many other genre distractions. To this day, I’ve not seen the full series of Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or Enterprise. I know…I know…I’m bummed about it too. I’ve actually given all of them a try. I watched the first couple of seasons of DS9, the first full season of Voyager, and a good portion of the first season of Enterprise, who I feel had probably the best pilot Trek has ever seen (I know many will disagree). Still…somehow, somewhere, I lost interest. I still saw the movies, of course, but that was about it. I didn’t collect the comics, didn’t buy the toys, didn’t read the books. And then, while I was in Toys R Us yesterday looking for G.I. Joe Mighty Muggs (found Destro, but no Baronness), I came across the a TRU employee, stocking the shelves with the action figure line based on the new Trek movie. I have to admit, I found the figures themselves lacking. Playmates, the company behind the favorite toy lines of my youth (Ninja Turtles and Dick Tracy) are behind these figures, but they don’t seem to have that same old Playmate charm. There are 3.75″ figures, 6″ figures, and 12″ figures. My favorites are probably the 6″ ones. Under the racks of figures were the Enterprise....

Sometimes I feel like a monkey. You know what I mean. Too much crap, not enough time. This past weekend for instance… between working in the yard Friday night as well as all day Saturday and Sunday, social commitments and quality time with the missus, there has been remarkably little time for geekery. Sure, I managed to squeeze in both Dollhouse and Terminator: TSCC, but not much else. With work getting busier and busier, summer just right around the corner with more social and home responsibilities, my time to geek is at an all time low. I need more effective ways to get my geek on. Fortunately, there is one tool in my life that facilitates my geek: the iPhone. Obviously, the iPhone allows me to make phone calls and text my buddies. It also allows for web surfing, email, and twitter. Beyond those functions and the iPhones media iPod media functionality, it provides with other geekery as well. The Watchmen app was great for getting me revved up for the movie. I’m keeping it on my phone in hopes of seeing updates as we prep for the DVD release. I’m hoping that we see more apps such as this. Far and away my most favorite apps for iPhone are the comics available via iVerse Media. Through the app, I can take comics with me wherever I go. Whenever I have a moment free, I can read a comic right there on my phone. Best thing from iVerse right....

On tonight’s live episode of the Podge Cast, the hosts will be battling over which movie in our vast history of cinema is the best movie sequel of all time. I can think of a lot of really good sequels. Empire Strikes Back, for instance, is a superior film to A New Hope. For me though, there are only two films that approach the title Best Movie Sequel Ever. They are movies that I never tire of watching. Whenever I’m flipping channels and stumble on either film, I am compelled to stop what I am doing to watch. Godfather II is a remarkable film, delving into the origins of Vito Corleone and documenting Michael Corleone’s journey down a self-paved road to hell. It is a film classic. In addition to its deep commitment to story and displaying the flawed humanity of men who think themselves noble, The Godfather II, teaches life lessons: If anything in this life is certain, if history has taught us anything, it is that you can kill anyone. I don’t feel I have to wipe everybody out, Tom. Just my enemies. Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. Despite my abiding affection for the film, I have a hard time seeing The Godfather II as a sequel. The Godfather and it’s “sequel” seem more appropriately divided by an intermission than end and opening credits. Truly, they are one film. As such, I disqualify The Godfather II from consideration. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan....

You know, I think Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s finale episode, “All Good Things,” was one of the few finales that I felt was a proper send off to the series it ended. Let’s be honest, Buffy’s finale stunk and Angel’s finale killed Wesley, which I’ll never forgive. Yeah, he came back in the comic, but still. It’s not the same. Most of our favorite shows never actually made it to proper finales – the Trek shows (all but the original) have the fortunate distinction of all being able to have proper finales, even though Enterprise had to end their run a couple of years earlier than expected. Why the hell am I talking about ST:TNG’s finale episode when the cast you see above is most definitely not Trek’s? Well, Ron Moore, the writer of what is arguably the best Trek finale we’ve seen, is also the writer of this friday’s Battlestar Galactica finale, “Daybreak.” This Friday, at 9PM, my favorite currently running TV show will come to an end. Daybreak part 1 was pretty much a set up for this final episode, where Admiral Adama (Edward James Olmos) decides to take what remains of the Galactica to the Cylon stronghold, where Helo and Athena’s daughter Hera is being held by the Cylon’s – she is, after all, the first human/cylon child. Not sure how they’re planning to wrap up all the open storylines not yet resolved. Will Tyrol ever find out that Tory killed Cally? What the hell is....

How the heck did I not know about this? Thank you good people at TVShowsonDVD for letting me know that this beautiful thing exists, and is ready for me to spend my hard earned cash on. I mean, it’s Star Trek Scene It? people! If you’ve never played Scene It?, it’s a DVD game where you watch clips from movies and TV shows and answer questions – it could be something about the scene, the characters, or the movie/show in general. It’s a lot of fun. Of course, I haven’t even popped in my Star Wars or Indiana Jones DVD games. No one will play them with me. I’d imagine a Trek one would be even less accessible to my wife and friends. Still. Me wantee. Buy it from the official site!

The good folks at DVDActive had news this week of the upcoming release of some awesome meaty Star Trek goodness! Yes folks, our beloved Trek is coming to Blu-Ray! Don’t have a Blu-Ray Player? Buy a Ps3! Ha…just kidding. We all know the Ps3 sucks. Anyway, there are a couple of goodies coming out, not just the beauty you see on your right. There’s the Motion Picture Collection, which collects all of the original crew’s flicks (1-6), there’s a trilogy collection that has parts 2-4, and there’s the first season of the Original Series (if you bought the HD-DVD edition, you know how good they look)! I have all of them on DVD already…but dang. Those are some pretty boxes.

Dig this original piece, Ciphers, featuring The Spirit, Rorschach, and The Question. I always knew Superman was a Christ-figure, but was surprised to learn he’s a Methodist. The world is lousy with Catholic heroes, but where are the Episcopal superheroes? Could be maybe… Batman? You know you’ve been asking, “Who is Daniel?” Levar Burton jumps on the Jonathan Frakes bandwagon and throws Stuart Baird under the bus for the stinking heap of crap that Star Trek: Nemesis was. Can’t say I disagree, though I maintain there were script problems, too. B-4, indeed!

One of the few perks remaining to air travelers is Sky Mall, or as I call it: The-catalogue-of-great-things-The-Wife-won’t-let-me-buy. Usually I fantasize about the At Home BeerTender or the Ultimate Pathfinder Watch. Hell, I even groove to Magellan’s Travel Vest. On this week’s flight, I found the coolest thing on planet Earth or any planet in the UFP: The limited-edition Star Trek (TOS) Captain’s Chair! This life-size replica swivels, has light up controls, and sound effects. I need this! I plan on setting it up in the living room. I’m ordering red shirts for all the dogs and a blue shirt for the cat. He strikes me as the science officer type. The Wife? Well, Naughty First Officer comes to mind. Or Naughty Yeoman? Only 1701 were produced. That makes it a collectors item and at only a mere $2717.01, it’s an investment! It can only appreciate in value, right?

Remember when you were a kid and it was easy to meet other geeks? Jamie and I have known each other since grade school. For awhile, I knew him simply as the kid who was always late for the bus. One day, though, we were seated at the same table. We were each drawing. I was working on some giant starship fight scene involving the U.S.S. Enterprise and a war group of three Klingon D-7s. As I illustrated phaser-fire lancing out from the Constitution Class Federation Cruiser shearing the nacelle from the lead Klingon ship, I verbalized the imagined explosion. Jamie looked up from his skecth, “You make sound effects when you draw, too?” And we’ve been friends ever since. It was easy to pick out my friend Gary. The Tom Baker Doctor Who scarf was a dead give-a-way. As we get older and enter into the business world, it’s less appropriate to wear your geek on your sleeve, or wrapped around your neck. The sad truth is that if you want to be taken seriously in the corporate world, you have to let people get to know your career persona before you come out of the closet to them as huge frikkin’ geek. Otherwise, you run the risk of being disregarded in terms of skills beyond chukkin’ dice and layin’ the smackdown in Halo. It’s a cautious courtship. For instance… My partner in crime, Paul, and I have known each other for four years both of us working for....

Holy crapola! Little did I know when I woke this morning that I would be able to share such awesome news with you! According to DVDActive, a new Deluxe Edition of Galaxy Quest is coming to DVD on May 12th! They go on to say that the extras will include featurettes (Historical Documents: The Story of Galaxy Quest, Never Give Up. Never Surrender: The Intrepid Crew of the NSEA Protector, By Grabthar’s Hammer, What Amazing Effects, Alien School – Creating the Thermian Race, Actors in Space), a Thermian Audio Track, deleted scenes, a Sigourney Raps feature, and the theatrical trailer. Kind of disappointing, honestly. I think we were all hoping for the uncut, darker version of the film that Tim Allen says they filmed. You know, the one where Sigourney Weaver drops the F-Bomb? (it’s dubbed over in the final version of the film) Either way, better than the barebones DVD we’ve had for years now! Pick it up on May 12th!
