Man, this thing is awesome. Guess we know what Robert Rodriguez has been up to instead of, you know, directing movies. Not to be mean, but has he directed a flick since Grindhouse? Besides Machete, of course, which was co-directed. I love me some Robert Rodriguez, and I’d just love to see more output from him – this short is a perfect example why!

Whoa…how cool would it be to see Arnold Schwarzenegger in a new Terminator film?

If your answer was “not at all,” then we’re on the same page.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always been a big fan of The Schwarz, but I think he’s probably a little too old to play the Terminator, no matter how good a shape he gets in when he gets back into acting.  Not only that, the franchise has kind of written itself into a corner – if they go with the whole Salvation future timeline…well, not a good idea.  And the original timeline kind of…well, ended in Terminator 3.  And Arnold can’t exactly play the same guy he did in that movie because he’s D-E-D dead.

While I’m not sure of The Schwarz’s place in the new Terminator film, the rumors that Justin Lin (every Fast and the Furious film since part 3, Tokyo Drift) will be directing  the new film?  Perfect choice.  Though I guess that means he has nothing to do with the Highlander reboot they rumored last week.  Mixed blessing….

Just to give you an idea of how picky I am when it comes to movies, I may see 4 or 5 movies at the movie theater in a given year.  So typically a trailer really has to move me to go see a movie.  True Grit was that type of trailer.  Jeff Bridges sounded like such a bad ass in that trailer, I was in.  I knew academically that it was a remake of John Wayne movie, but I had never seen the original.  When a couple of my buddies expressed interest in going, I knew we had to posse up and head out.

I saddled up and headed to the local theater to see my first Western in quite some time.  Was it worth the ride?

I’m a big fan of Jason Statham.  And I’m a big fan of crazy ass Ben Foster, who always plays a crazy ass.  So why the hell have I not heard about this film before seeing the standee in theaters last week?  Holy crap it looks fantastic!  Supposedly a remake of the Charles Bronson  1972 film, this film follows Statham as a hitman trying to show crazy ass Ben Foster the ropes…and blowing lots of shit up in the process!

Okay, full disclosure.

I just about wanted to kill myself watching the original Tron.

I couldn’t remember much about the original Tron, but was given an opportunity to see it a couple of days ago, and jumped at the chance, figuring that it could enhance my viewing of Tron: Legacy, which I’ve been dying to see.  See, fans of the original have been excited about Legacy for its continuing of the storyline – me, I was excited about it because it looked amazing.  I didn’t know much about the story and, to be honest, Marvel’s prequel comic to the movie just confused the hell out of me.

So I gave the first flick a shot and, while I admire what it was doing at the time, I also understand why ultimately the film is a cult hit and not one of those cherished classics, like Star Wars or Indiana Jones.  I mean, it’s quite an unexciting film.  Visually interesting, but storywise, it just didn’t cut it for me.  If anything, it actually hurt my motivation to see the sequel.  I understand that it has its audience, and I get it…I just couldn’t get into the movie.  Nonetheless, I was determined to see Tron Legacy on its opening weekend.  Did 28 years make a difference in storytelling technique?  Did the film live up to its awesome visuals? The end of a beloved saga is always going to divide fans.  Revenge of the Sith (and even Return of the Jedi) have hardcore fans, and hardcore detractors.  So do the final Pirates of the Caribbean series, and The Matrix films, amongst many others.  It’s just impossible to please everybody.

The final Harry Potter novel is almost universally adored and the filmmakers decided that, rather than being willing to sacrifice any important story beats, it would be better to split the story into two movies, which makes Harry Potter the Deathly Hollows, Part 1 primarily build up to the eventual big battle between the forces of good and evil.  Read the rest of this entry »

Tonight, I was able to attend TRON NIGHT 2010, a screening of 23 minutes from the upcoming Tron: Legacy (due out December 17th).  Tickets were given out for free on www.tronnight2010.com, and went very quickly.

I can’t lie, I don’t remember much about the original Tron, save for some of the iconic imagery.  Still, the trailers for the new film have blown me away, to the point that the new film is definitely one of my most anticipated films of 2010.  So I’ve been psyched about TRON NIGHT for weeks now.

My wife and I got to the theater an hour early (yes, for 20 minutes worth of footage), and there was already a short line waiting.  What surprised me is that, for as little as I remember the first film, more than half of the people in line were probably not even born when the original film was released.

After taking my cell phone back to the car (they weren’t allowed at all in the theater), we were given some posters, and wrist bands.  Pounded with the incredible sound of IMAX 3D, the preview began…. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been a Sylvester Stallone fan my entire life.  Just something about the guy and his rise to fame I find inspiring.  I remember the bad Stallone years, right after Get Carter.  That film flopped and no one liked it (I did), but then it was followed by either limited release movies or straight-to-DVD fare…not good for one of the biggest action stars of all time.

Still, Stallone managed, by revisiting old characters, to revive his career into a place it hasn’t been in years.  Rocky Balboa did well at the box office, and was a damn good movie.  Following that, he did Rambo which again did well in box office and critical reviews.  I’m really happy to see Stallone putting out quality work again, and apparently so are a lot of people.

But as exciting as it may have been to see Rocky and Rambo one more time…the announcement of The Expendables got everyone foaming at the mouth.  Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Robert, Steve Austin, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis?  How could you possibly go wrong?  This would surely be the greatest action movie of all time….right? This past Friday, the Robert Rodriguez produced Predators, the third entry in the popular franchise (not counting the AvP entries), was released, and fan enthusiasm is at an all time high for the franchise.  With mostly positive reviews and a decent box office opening, is this a revitalization of the beloved franchise?

I loved the first two Predator movies, and with talent like Robert Rodriguez, and direction from Nimrod Antal (Vacancy), was definitely excited about this newest entry.  Does Predators live up to the hype?  After twenty years, does it bring life back to the alien hunters?  Or should they have been left dead?

Warning: very MILD spoilers after the jump!

I was asked that in the spirit of our nation’s birthday, indicate a favorite patriotic item, superhero, movie, etc.  I know most thoughts would drift to the hero who wears the flag with him, and he’s a darn good choice.  Here are a few of my favorite patriotic movies.

Saving Private Ryan:

Listen, if you’ve played a lot of video games, you have been deluged with World War II media, but for my money this one was the best.  I think that this was one of Tom Hank’s best movies.  The first few minutes of the movie were the best indication of what it was like to storm the beaches of Normandy.

The story tells of one unit, whose job it is to get Private Ryan out of the fight, as all four of his brothers had died in the fighting.  The unit takes hit after hit trying to save just this one soldier, and Spielberg showed the ups and downs of the soldier’s lives in the Big One.
