You know, demos are the new video game rentals.  I don’t like paying the high prices of video game rentals, and places like Gamefly seem to always be out of stock of the games I want to rent until they’ve been out for a while.  It seems to me that many video game companies are getting smarter about releasing demos to whet the appetites of gamers for their upcoming releases (though some, oddly, don’t release the demo until the game has already been released).

I’ve been playing a ton of game demos (not just for big releases, but trial versions of downloadable games as well) this week, and some have really blown me away with how good they are!  Read the rest of this entry »

Another quiet week on the gaming front for me, until I saw the latest gameplay video for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Wow. I immediately went out and preordered this after watching the video!

You can watch the video on Kotaku: http://kotaku.com/5623602/assassins-creed-brotherhood-single+player-in-action

While I’m on the subject of Assassin’s Creed, let me take a moment to express how good the series really is. The first game really gets a bad rap, and it certainly deserves some criticism in particular gameplay areas, but the story it sets up is quite engaging. Assassin’s Creed II takes the gameplay and story to whole new levels. As soon as I finished the game, I immediately began clamoring for a sequel. Thankfully, I’m getting something to hold me over until Assassin’s Creed III in the form of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood! This video has me so pumped, I just can’t wait.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed the AC:Brotherhood trailer as much as I did! If you aren’t a fan of the series, give it a shot. It’s well worth your gaming time, trust me!

Thanks for stopping by The Player’s Club. As always, feel free to get a hold of me here or @clnolen. See you next week!

Most people say that 2009′s Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of, if not the, best superhero game of all time.  And I feel the same way – really, the game is so damn fantastic, I can honestly say that it’s the only time I can think of in recent memory where the hype actually was deserved by the product.

Was it perfect?  Hell no – there were large faults in the game that took away from the overall experience.  But with the announcement of the sequel, Batman: Arkham City, due next Fall (yes…not until Fall 2011…dammit), I’m like a little kid with excitement.  I can’t wait to see some footage from the game, and find out more about the story.  What would I like to see in the sequel?  Find out after the jump! I have a soft spot for anthropomorphic animals in genre fiction, especially in space.  Rocket Raccoon, Bucky O’ Hare, and, especially Star Fox.  I loved the original Star Fox back on the Super Nintendo (the first game to use the Super FX engine) and this remake introduced the Rumble Pack to the N64, which vibrated the controller like a sonuvabitch whenever you got shot.

StarFox 64 is available for download in the Nintendo Wii Shop and, even though the Wii controller doesn’t vibrate, I knew I had to give the game another try to see if I could relive my fond memories of playing the game for hours, and with my brother in multiplayer arenas. Though most of the big hardware announcements came in the first two days of E3, there were sure plenty of awesome video games shown off on days 3 and 4, and it looks like all of us video games fans will be pretty broke this coming year!

Hunted: The Demon’s Forge: A dungeon crawler from Bethesda that looks pretty sweet.  Apparently, control scheme is like Gears of War.  Always a good thing.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising: Apparently, the game will bridge the gap in Raiden’s story from MGS2 to MGS4.  Does anyone care about Raiden?

Gears of War 3: Ice T will be smackin’ bitches in Gears of War 3.  Hell yeah.

Battlestar Galactica MMO:  Hmmm…looks like it’s set in the original universe.  Lame.

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars: God, I hope it’s better than the last Clone Wars video game.

Silent Hill 8: Silent Hill is coming back next year – not many details revealed just yet, but it seems to focus less on action like the last game, Silent Hill: Homecoming.

Enslaved: Sounds….odd.

Starfox 64: Continuing the trend of re-releasing N64 games, Starfox 64 is coming to the new 3DS.

The Witcher 2: Kinda pissed the original was only released for PC.  Looks like part 2 will be too.

Ghost ‘N Goblins: Gold Knights II:  Does anyone remember part 1?

The announcements are coming out a mile a minute this year at E3, but what’s most surprising to me is that Hollywood’s remake craze seems to have made it’s way into gaming, as half of this year’s announcements seem like reboots/remakes of games of yesteryear.  Will they improve on the classics?

Day 1 saw some awesome announcements for the Xbox 360, with Day 2 focusing on the Wii and Ps3.  Click any subject to read more!

Nintendo 3Ds: Nintendo’s 3D handheld, glasses-free system seems to have made a big impression.  A ton of games are due out in short order for it, as well.

Donkey Kong Country: Due out this holiday season, the return to the world of DKC is a 2D platformer that looks to bring back the joy of the N64 classic.

Twisted Metal Ps3: A new Twisted Metal was revealed for PS3, in which you get helicopters, massively destructive cities, 16 player online, 4 player splitscreen, and  many new modes.  Trailer here.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn: Another 2D side-scroller for the Wii, this time featuring the little ghost Kirby in a very Little Big Planet looking world.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: Yup, another new Zelda game for the Wii.  Yawn.

Infamous 2: New powers and giant monsters await fans of the new superhero action series from Sucker Punch Studios.

Dead Space: Extraction: The rail shooter released for the Wii will soon be out in HD for the Playstation 3, using the new Ps3 Move technology.

Portal 2: Not just for the Xbox 360 this time – Ps3 fans rejoice.

Gran Turismo 5: Coming this November.  Do people still play this series?

Playstation Move: Sony’s Motion Sensor controller is due out this September, for WAY cheaper than a Kinect.

Epic Mickey: Still looking awesome!

Heroes on the Move: Sony will be teaming up Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper in one game?  What, so Spyro?

Rage: Yes, id Software is apparently still working on it.

Goldeneye: The N64 classic returns, this time for the Wii, and featuring DANIEL CRAIG.  Yes, you read that right.  Looks pretty amazing, actually.  Can.  Not.  Wait.

Dead Rising: Case Zero: Released a month before Dead Rising 2 hits stores, a prequel set before the events of the much-anticipated sequel.

Keep refreshing for the latest news!

Damn…E3 snuck up on me this year.  I got excited about a couple of video game announcements and, all of a sudden, there were a billion of them!  Why go all over the web when you can get all the kick ass video game announcements here?

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit: Looks like EA finally wised up and realized that people play Need for Speed games to have awesome car chases with lots of crashes and cops chasing you the entire time.  No footage shown, but if it’s good as the last Hot Pursuit (there were two of those, actually), we’re in for an AWESOME racing experience.

Dead Space 2: Fans of the first game will be happy to know that not only does the sequel ramp up the action, but the gore as well.  Looks like Isaac not only made it past the original, but he’ll be doing his Necromorph hunting in a futuristic city.  Dead Space II is due out January 25, 2011.

Xbox Live Summer of Arcade: We’re getting new downloadable Castlevania and Tomb Raider games, and that Castlevania one looks FRIGGIN AMAZING.

Natal/Kinect: Microsoft unveiled its new motion sensor gaming system (now called Kinect and priced at $150) and unveiled a slew of new games, including a new Star Wars game that looks mighty impressive.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Yes, a new Star Wars RPG, set during the years WAY before the movie during the Old Republic of the Jedi Order.

Xbox 360 Slim: Yup, now that I have an Elite, they’re releasing a new “slim” Xbox 360.  What’s included?  A 250 GB removable hard drive, a more efficient power source, HDMI capability, and 802.11n Wi-Fi.  All for $300.

Bulletstorm: This awesome looking first person shooter is due out next February.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising:  Ya know, a lot of these games were announced at the 2009 E3, weren’t they?  But, new footage of the newest Metal Gear Solid game has been unveiled.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood: Due out this November is the newest entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, a single-player continuation of the Ezio storyline from AC2.

Gears of War 3: Four Player Co-Op?  Hell yes.

The Force Unleashed II: God dang this game looks incredible…but, ya know, if this Jedi is really that powerful, why did they give a crap about Anakin and Luke?

X-Com: The beloved PC game returns…as a first person shooter that looks wholly unimpressive.

Marvel v. Capcom 3: Deadpool vs. Devil May Cry’s Dante?  This game can’t come out soon enough.

DC Universe Online: An awesome new trailer has been unveiled for the game, due out this November.

Driver 5: Tanner returns….except that he;s in a coma and all of this is happening in his head and you can spiritually leap into other bodies. Whoa…

The triumphant return of VIDEO GAME MADNESS!  In our never ending quest to speak about everything we geek about, it’s time to write about some awesome video games that need your sweet, sweet lovin’!

Recently, Disney Interactive released a demo for their new racing game Split Second on both the Playstation Network and Xbox Live, and if you haven’t downloaded it, then  STOP READING THIS AND DOWNLOAD IT NOW.  The demo for Split Second is, hands down, one of the most effective demos I’ve played in years.  You get a good feel for the game, and you get a pretty spectacular racing course that changes a bit every time you play it.

See, the premise of Split Second is a little different from your average racing game.  The goal isn’t just to win the race, but you have the ability to attack other drivers while you do it.  And not in a Death Race kind of way with machine guns strapped to your car, or throwing turtle shells out of your tail pipe.  No, the way you win these races is by setting off well-times traps – exploding trucks, buildings, planes crashing into the middle of the racing course, skyscrapers toppling over, helicopters dropping bombs…whatever it takes to win, and look good doing it.

The strength of the demo convinced me that Split Second was a must own, and I recently picked it up and have been playing it pretty much non-stop.  Check out the rest of my review after the jump!
