Ya know, filed under “wasted properties,” you’re sure to find the character of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes.  Do you realize their hasn’t been any new Tarzan comic material released since 2001′s Superman/Tarzan: Sons of the Jungle Elseworlds book?  (yes, that cover at right is by current Amazing Spider-Man artist Humberto Ramos)

I’d imagine this might have something to do with Disney having some kind of Tarzan ownership rights, but that can’t be right?  After all, the movie was in 1999, and the aforementioned Dark Horse comic came out two years later.  Does Dark Horse still own some kind of comic rights?  If not, why isn’t Disney doing anything with the property?  Come to think of it, since the end of the Tarzan and Jane TV series that followed up the animated movie, I don’t think I’ve seen anything from them on the character, even in their parks.  I know there was a 2003 Tarzan TV series on the WB/CW, but it didn’t last very long (honestly, given its format, it would be a big hit nowadays).

I mean, this is Tarzan.  It’s not Sleeping Beauty or Beauty and the Beast.  Tarzan is a character that should have continuing adventures, both in his world and in man’s world.  And while I understand that comics set in the jungle typically don’t sell well (has a Ka-Zar series ever lasted more than a year?), you can easily take Tarzan out of the jungle and bring him into the city.  You can even make him younger and more of a Batman-esque character (if you go dark) or Spider-Man-esque (if you go lighter).  The thing about Tarzan is that, unlike some other characters, he does lend himself to multiple kinds of storytelling, even science fiction (remember Tarzan on Mars?).

I’ve to see a modern Tarzan comic, though my tastes would prefer to see him in the city.  What say you?  Would you like to see Tarzan return?

A very special bonus interview this week as Paul chats with COO of Ape Entertainment, Brent Erwin.  You may be familiar with Ape Entertainment from their popular line of titles based off of Dreamworks properties such as MegaMind, Shrek, and Kung Fu Panda, or their new take on Richie Rich.

Brent Erwin is a 22-year veteran of the Comics Industry, having opened his first Comic Shop “Four Color Comics & Cards” in Waco, TX at age 19. Brent went on to become a Sales Representative for Diamond Comics Distributors, working with Acclaim Comics in New York City. Leaving Diamond Comics Distributors, Brent became a Marketing Coordinator for the direct market, under the authority of Fabian Nicieza, the Publisher of Acclaim Comics. Brent has also worked for Wizard Entertainment, known as publisher of the leading comics industry magazine “Wizard the Comics Magazine”. His position with Wizard was as Senior Advertising Account Manager.

In 1998, Brent launched SmallPressComics.com, an on-line community devoted to Small Press and Independent Comics. In 2003, comics devotees David Hedgecock and Mike Hall teamed with Brent and founded Ape Entertainment. They are publishers of high-quality original graphic novels, comic books, and illustrated fiction.

Stay tuned on Monday for a chance to win a signed copy of Ape Entertainment’s new Richie Rich comic!

Okay … not sure what this is, but the promo art (from Newsarama) is pretty sweet.  I’m not sure if this is another creator owned thing, like Gregory’s The Waking and Fly (both of which we enjoyed the hell out of), or something akin to Grimm Fairy Tales.  Guess we’ll find out when September solicits get released in the coming weeks.

This Saturday, after you sleep in a little bit to recover from all the awesome of seeingThor on Friday, make sure to eat your Wheaties and get your ass out to your Local Comic Shop for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!  Yes friends, the greatest day of the year, the first Saturday in May, is HERE!!!!  (well, second greatest day, really, after Free Funnybook Day, coming next Monday!)

All week on IoM, we’re going to give advance reviews of some of the mostly hotly anticipated comics this Saturday and let you know which ones are worth checking out, or which ones might be better left for other fans.

I’m going to admit, first and foremost, I’m not familiar with the universe portrayed in Elric: The Balance Lost, from Boom! Studios and based on the popular character created by Michael Moorcock.  The FCBD comic, from the creative team of Chris Roberson and Francesco Biagini, seeks to correct this by creating, essentially, an entry point into the world of Elric, explaining the character and the dynamics of his world, as well as showing the comics history of the character, and a sketchbook of designs for the series.

Even then though, I couldn’t get into Elric: The Balance Lost.  That’s not to say it’s bad.  The art is quite good, and I’m sure the story could appeal to fans of this world.  However, I’m just tired of the usual tropes of sword and sorcery comics, and the old English used in so many of them.  It’s one of the reasons I enjoy IDW’s Dungeons and Dragons book so much – it’s told in a modern storytelling style unique to this genre.  So, it’s just not my thing.  However, it does portray an interesting concept of a multiverse, where Elric is actually multiple people in different universes.  If you’re a fan of the character, or of this type of storytelling, you’ve probably already got your eye on this one.  If you’re not into this kind of thing, I’m not sure Elric: The Balance Lost is going to convince you to jump on board.

We sure do love some Greg Pak here at IoM.  So when we hear that he’s offering his newest creator owned book for free, you can be damn sure we’re going to jump at the chance to share it with our listeners.  Vision Machine has been getting great reviews, and Pak and penciller R.B. Silva are giving the entire thing away for free!  How cool is that?

In the year 2061, three friends grapple with revolutionary change when Sprout Computers releases the most visionary piece of personal technology ever created. The latest sci-fi mindbender from writer Greg Pak (“Planet Hulk”) and penciller R.B. Silva (“Jimmy Olsen”).

We’re not joshin’ ya – it really is free!  “Vision Machine” is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike license that lets you copy, share, and remix the book non-commercially as long as you credit Pak Man Productions and release your remixes/derivative material under the same Creative Commons license.

Not only that, you can actually remix the book for some added goodies!  Stretch those creative muscles and “you could cut and paste the panels of the book to tell your own story, tell new stories in the world or using the characters of ‘Vision Machine,’ or even make a film involving the comic book’s story or characters — as long as your use is non-commercial, you credit Pak Man Productions, and you release your derivative material under the same CC license.”
