All of you nerds already know of Freezepop, I’m sure. With songs appearing in a few popular video games and having played PAX a few times, Freezepop has been in nerd culture enough already. Of course, it is a specific branch of nerd culture and I’ll explain a bit for those of you in other areas. Freezepop are, technically, a synthpop band. Their sound is really damned close to an old gameboy though and a lot of their songs deal with nerd culture.

I discovered Freezepop when they played at PAX a few years ago. I was listening to some of the bands that would be playing and really ended up taking a shine to Freezepop. There are a few things about them that annoy me though. They remix the shit out of every song. The video below is the original version of a track that I think I have ten different copies of. Some of the remixes really really suck too.

What happens if you cross Rammstein and the Beastie Boys? I have no idea, but Die Fantastischen Vier (or Fanta 4 for short) are one of the first German Hip-Hop groups to actually rap in German. If you can enjoy music in a different language AND you like hip-hop then you might actually like Fanta 4, but I make no promises.

I stumbled across Fanta 4 while in a hip-hop phase, something that comes and goes for me, and while I was dating a chick who was learning German. She wanted to listen to more German language music to help her study and I wanted hip-hop. It worked out… except for when she didn’t like hip-hop. Still, I’ve always enjoyed foreign music. Any music that can transcend lingual barriers is cool with me, and Fanta 4 pulls it off.

I can’t remember what the first song I heard one, but the attached is one of my favorites. It has a bit more of a pop sound then most of their songs but its damned fun to listen to. Plus they say a few words of English so I can pretend I know what the hell they are talking about.

I’ve been holding off on writing this article for awhile now. I discovered William Elliott Whitmore around the same time as O’Death – They both did 7″ splits with Murder by Death. The reason I waited was because I wasn’t sure at first if I liked Whitmore or not.

After spending a week listening to a few albums I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m actually really enjoying Whitmore. Its a little more country then I’m used to, which is what caused a lot of the initial hesitation, but there is a Blues and Punk feel mixed in there too. All of it gives him a pretty unique sound. While most of his songs are fairly simple they carry a passion and soul that is anything but simple.

I’ve included the song Hell or High Water. So you can, as the song says, “Smoke um if you got um. Drink your glasses to the bottom.”

Again with the old CDs I found, another band the turned up was Type O Negative. Unlike most bands I listen to, I remember how I discovered Type O. It was 1997 and I was a wee lad of thirteen. I bought a video game, Blood and on the CD there was a music video. I have no freaking idea why this video was in with the game, as far as I know Type O had nothing to do with the game.

The years have passed and my enjoyment of Type O fluctuates. Sometimes, like recently, I’ve really enjoyed their music and other times I find it juvenile. Regardless, I think its good (in that depressing sort of good) music and I doubt they will ever leave my collection. I’ve decided to enclose the first song I ever heard, Love You To Death. I couldn’t get the music video because its locked but luckily YouTube has alternates. Here’s the Music Video if you want to experience Type O the way I did for the first time.

This week, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know. Everyone knows who Queen is. I mean, according to The Guinness Book of World Records, Queen albums have spent a total of 27 years on UK album charts. In case you missed that: 27 years, that’s more time than any other musical act. Queen has spent more time on the charts then I’ve been alive.

Why write about such a well known, popular band? Because I just rediscovered them. I have a few Queen albums but they were lost to me until recently. While flipping through an old CD case I found I stumbled onto my old Queen CDs. I haven’t though about Queen in a few years and I’d bet I’m not the only one who does this with music. That is why I write this. For those of you who already like the band, but just haven’t thought about it in awhile.

The biggest dilemma I have is what single song to post with this. I’m tempted to go with Bohemian Rhapsody, what is considered by many to be the greatest single of all time. Maybe Under Pressure? It’s got Queen AND David Bowie, one of the greatest team-ups since Peanut Butter and Chocolate. I could score some extra nerd cred and post Princes Of The Universe. No, none of those. I’m going to post the first Queen song I ever heard around twenty years ago.

If you’re familiar with how Nine Inch Nails works then the idea behind Pain should be easy to grasp. Hypocrisy frontman Peter TÃĪgtgren is the sole member of Pain, similar to Trent Reznor and NIN. NIN is also a good comparison for sound, though Pain has a bit heavier metal sound. Pain is somewhere between Industrial Metal and 1980′s-inspired Techno. Don’t let that scare you off though, each album has a distinct sound and there is even some pretty heavy variation between tracks.

On a slightly related note I ran into Pain on Pandora, the streaming radio site. If you like music and you haven’t used Pandora yet… get off your ass. Seriously, I’ve found some great music there. Before you run off though check out the music video for Zombie Slam below and see if Pain is for you. Then let me know what you think.

A few weeks back I decided I wouldn’t just blog about music I like, I’d blog about any music I come across. While that time it was clearly for an inside joke, this time I’m serious. I don’t really like O’Death but I’ve listened to a half-dozen tracks and figured someone else might like it. Since music is such a subjective experience even if I didn’t care for something it doesn’t mean that you won’t love it.

That said, I discovered O’Death because they did a split 7″ album with Murder by Death. There have been a few of these 7″ splits and the idea is there are two tracks from two different bands covering songs by the other band. All these tracks can be heard over a Murder by Death’s Band Camp page and I strongly suggest checking them out.

A little different this week, I’ve included the O’Death cover of Murder by Death’s song Brother. Since this track is the only O’Death song I’ve enjoyed I figured it would be the one I shared. Also, its not on YouTube so I had to find an alternative. Before anyone complains, I do like this track but it is still fairly representative of the O’Death sound. I’m not sure why but the rest of their work just didn’t jive with me.

Call it an oversight on my part that I’ve yet to mention the Sea Dogges here. For those of you who listen to RPG podcasts you might already be familiar with Springfrield’s own Capt’n Black’s Sea Dogges. Former podcasters, Chuck and Lonnie, of the Dragon’s Landing Inn are members and it was that connection that brought the Sea Dogges to my attention. Now, you might not know why I consider this a gross oversight. Let me explain.

In January there is a small con here in Springfield called VisionCon. It was at VisionCon that I interviewed C&L for the Bear Swarm! and went on to bootleg a Sea Dogges impromptu show. That entire show was released on the Bear Swarm! site free of charge over a month ago. Yet I forgot that I have a music blog to write about it. Oh well, better late then never.

Aside from having an hour worth of free music already linked to in this article, here’s a video for one of their original songs. I hope you all enjoy it.

I love rock opera. I love post-apocolyptic future settings. I love torn characters, tragic romance, deception, isolation, murder… ohhhh murder. I love gothic and punk fashions, cult films, and Paris Hilton… Ok, maybe not that last one. Repo! The Genetic Opera is not for everyone. Hell, its not even for the majority of people. Still, there are those like me that see it and fall deeply and passionately in love with it. Sure, it has it’s faults but those only make is enduring traits more… enduring.

So, why am I talking about a movie in a music column? Because its an Opera. Not a musical. Everything is sung, the entire movie is music. With that, I give you my favorite song from the Opera. I’ll say this again, this isn’t for everyone. Just like Rocky Horror or Plan 9 from Outer Space there will be a good number of people who don’t like it. That’s fine but if you do like it, welcome to the cult.

Have you ever wondered what Flogging Molly would sound like if Dave King was Romani instead of Irish? Neither had I, but since being introduced to Gogol Bordello I know. I had never heard the term Gypsy Punk but I guess if you can have Irish Punk then why the heck not?

Below you’ll find a video for the song Wonderlust King and I think it gives a good impression of the overall feel for this band. I’ve listened to a few albums and they have a wide-ranging sound but it always has a traditional Gypsy sound to it. That’s all I have to say, no break this week. Just a video to enjoy.
