“You’ve heard the rumors, and now StarTrek.com can officially confirm it: Star Trek: The Next Generation will be released in high-definition Blu-ray, starting in January with a sampler of several popular episodes, followed by a season-one set to be released later on in 2012, and subsequent seasons beaming down after that. Each of the 178 episodes spanning The Next Generation‘s seven seasons will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p for release in the Blu-ray format and, eventually, for runs on television and digital platforms in the U.S. and across the world. Star Trek: The Next Generation will, as fans know, be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012.”

The sampler will include the feature-length version of the series pilot, “Encounter at Farpoint,” as well the fan-favorite episodes “Sins of the Father” and “The Inner Light,” the former from season three and the latter from season five.  Not sure I’m on board for the sampler, but I know sales of it will affect the blu-ray releases of the full seasons.  If Paramount is smart, they’ll throw in a coupon for the full season sets – then I’m definitely on board.

I’m super excited to see TNG on Blu-Ray, especially with new effects and remastered from the original negatives.  It’s going to be like an entirely new experience – what say you?  Will this be enough to make you guys purchase?

Oh, and hey, if you’re a Trek fan, make sure to check out our brand new actual play, Star Trek: Aegean, which just released its first episode here!

You guys know I love me some Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights.  The event, which has been voted best theme park Halloween event multiple years in a row, is definitely the cream of the crop when it comes to top notch scares.  Universal Orlando definitely puts a ton of money and effort into the event, and last year’s 20th anniversary culminated a good number of outstanding storylines and themes that the attraction had been running for years.

This year, Universal is going to back to basics, primarily going with original concepts (save for one house based on the upcoming prequel to The Thing), including the event’s icon, Lady Luck.  For those avoiding any specific details on the event, I’ll briefly summarize by saying that, while I wasn’t overly impressed with the scarezones this year (more detail on that after the jump), the houses this year were absolutely amazing in theming.  Universal stepped up their game this year and created some truly memorable, exciting experiences that will impress you while trying to scare you.  Definitely worth the price of admission, some of the houses are truly awe-inspiring.  I highly recommend checking out the event this year.  I do want to note, however, that due to the popularity of the event, I’d also recommend finding some way to attend more than once.  One trip will leave you sorely missing out on some of the event.

For those who don’t mind some spoilers, details on the event and reviews of each house are after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Well, much like I’m attending this year’s Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando, Florida, I’ll also be attending (a scant hour or so away), Busch Gardens Tampa’s awesome Howl-O-Scream event as well!

I’ve been a huge fan of this event, especially some of their awesome mascots.  Characters like The Raven Twins, the House of Vayne, the Death Jockey…vicious stuff like you don’t see here in Virginia.  Well, this year, though the advertising of each park is a little different, the theme is the same between Tampa and it’s Virginia counterpart – “The Dark Side of the Gardens.”

In Tampa, four houses return from last year, including “Alone,” a premium (pay extra) experience where you get to go through a house…well, alone!  New this year are a Zombie Casino and a Poe house, interestingly both similar to themes being used at UOR in Orlando.  Still, I’m sure the parks will do vastly different things with them.

I can’t wait!

Late last night Universal Studios Orlando released official details regarding this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event down at Universal Studios Orlando.

As usual, your favorite IoM Pauloween writer will be there covering the event! Check out more of the full details after the jump! Read the rest of this entry »

As in the previous two years, your buds at IoM will be attending this year’s Halloween Horror Nights even in Orlando, Florida at Universal Studios Orlando.  Now, this year’s event has been shrouded in secrecy, the only hints revealed so far pointing to a casino/gambling theme.  For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been getting small playing cards with sayings on them related to “luck” and “death.”  Great stuff.

Well…this week news is finally starting to leak out.  On Screamscape, it was revealed that an Orlando Burger King accidentally put up a promotional poster for HHN early, revealing the event’s icon, Lady Luck (at right).  In addition, the TV commercial seems to have leaked online as well (below).

What’s most surprising, though, is that it seems that the themes for all of the haunts have been leaked too.  That’s pretty rare, but I guess when set pics for all of next year’s blockbusters can leak with all the security on movie sets, something like this isn’t too hard to get out.  Also from the link above, here are the themes for the eight houses (scarezone themes haven’t leaked yet):

  • The Thing, based on the upcoming movie
  • Madness of Poe
  • an old spooky cemetery
  • a crazy WWI era hospital
  • Holiday horror gone wrong
  • one based on the Saws & Steam scare zone from last year
  • something themed to Runes
  • one themed to a haunted Spanish ghost ship

Remember “Paul’s Horror Flix?” It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed any horror films for the site, and I kinda miss talking about films in my favorite genre, especially with Pauloween coming up in just a month and a half (as long time readers know, Pauloween is a month-long event, not just October 31st!).  Well, it’s about damn time we brought the tradition of chatting about our favorite scary flicks back to IoM, starting each Friday with FEARFUL FRIDAYS (check out previous horror reviews here).

First off, Grave Encounters, a “found footage” horror movie due out October 18th on DVD. In the movie, a group of paranormal investigators, similar to television’s popular Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures shows, investigates a haunted hospital. Though the site housed some pretty tragic events when filled with the living, since it’s been abandoned, folks have been seeing eerie apparitions and hearing odd noises. As we’re told, this is the sixth episode of the aborted “Grave Encounters” tv series, and gathered from the raw footage filmed during their visit there.

I actually really enjoy the Underworld movies. I mean, sure, they’re poorly written and are a little silly, but they appeal to the kid in me who likes to see cool looking people shooting cool looking vampires and werewolves. Really, they’re for the type of comic fan who likes fun comics, and is willing to believe that yes, vampires can make sunlight-filled bullets because, you know, it’s just cool.

Well, it’s been some time since we last saw Kate Beckinsale in the leather get-up, and I for one have missed her.

The movie opens in 3D and 2D theaters on January 20, 2012. Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, it stars Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley and Charles Dance.

I’d expect to see this trailer this weekend if you watch Conan in 3D. FYI … I also hear that you may see a new trailer for Ghost Rider with that flick too.

With the might of Warner Brothers behind them, DC has produced a new trailer that will be showing in theaters as part of National CineMedia’s “FirstLook” pre-feature programming (Source).  Sadly, the actual trailer that’s going to be showing in theaters leaves a lot to be desired, I think.

Where’s the mention that these are “great for new readers,” or a call to people who’ve never read comics to check out the all new stories of heroes they love? Instead we get the statement “52 All New #1′s” as if the general public really cares about that. I think it’s ultimately ineffective, which is sad.

However, there is a 2-minute version of the trailer which I think works significantly better. It still has some of the same failings in that it doesn’t call out to the folks who actually have never picked up comics before, but the longer breathing room gives a better look at some of the heroes and comics. Check out that one after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

So you wake up Monday morning and hop directly on your computer to download the newest episode of your favorite comics podcast, Funnybooks with Aron and Paulie, only to find…nothing.

What the hell?  Where’s your weekly dose of Funnybooks madness with your favorite hosts?  What comics were worth buying last week from your local El Camino Comics, and what new dirty jokes and insults are you supposed to use this week?

Well…the delay is intentional.  Last week’s episode of Knights of Reignsborough was released a little late and, since a good portion of the listenership overlaps, we thought we’d give time to let everyone download and listen to that one before we bombard you with some new audio.

So this new episode will drop this coming Wednesday, on new comic book day, so you can listen while you read your new purchases!  Not only that, some exciting stuff is in store on this week’s episode including comedy rockstar Mikey Mason‘s new single, and a fond (temporary) farewell to one of your Funnybooks hosts!

PODCASTER’S NOTE:

Due to scheduling conflicts, we are unable to present our regularly scheduled Funnybooks episode.  Instead, please enjoy a special edition of Funnybooks Unlimited!  And come back Friday for Issue 5 of Knights of Reignsborough…

So what’s “dogging?”  Damned if we know.

Luckily, Cardboard Crack co-host and ENnies recognized podcaster Jonathan Landreth joins Paul and Tim on the mics this week to explain what dogging, blumpkins, and a chili dog are.  Here’s a hint … keep a barf bag handy.

The boys start off talking about the biggest thing they’ve ever eaten, before getting into the awful, awful truth of Jonathan’s new porn obsession (with some zombie stuff thrown in for good measure), hairy French chicks, dropping anchor, and then, inexplicably, end up talking about Dragon Age 2.

Get ready for an FBU like you’ve never heard before with Paul, Jonathan, and Tim, where we talk about anything but comic books!
