Paul’s home alone!  The horror!

Aron, Wayne, Tim, and Andrew were all at Fear the Con this weekend, leaving Paul to fend for himself in the scary podcasting waters.  What was he to do?  Luckily, some loyal listeners, Ray and Rob, volunteered to join him for a special episode about this weekend’s huge blockbuster hit, The Avengers.

They talk about their favorite scenes, characters, moviegoing experiences and…perhaps most importantly…what you do to get that Avengers fix after the movie!

Whether you read comics regularly or not, if you enjoyed the movie, give this episode a listen!

Warning: You are entering a spoiler-rich environment! If you haven’t seen The Avengers yet and do not wish the movie spoiled for you, download and listen AFTER you’ve seen it.

Along those lines, we have included our interview with Jim Starlin from last year who also spoiled a little key information from the movie.

With a career in comics spanning 40 years, Jim Starlin was responsible for re-imagining such characters as Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock for Marvel… and then killed them.

He’s the fellow who gave us Thanos (who loves Death) and over at DC, he killed off Jason Todd in the now infamous A DEATH IN THE FAMILY.

Sensing a theme?

Jim Starlin produced the third volume of his creator owned BREED over at Image Comics. It’s a horror story centering on the activities of Ray Stoner who is half-demon, half-man. Monstrous hijinks ensue.

Of course, Starlin was a pioneer in the realm of creator-owned content.

Starlin debuted his Vanth Dreadstar character in the serialized Metamorphosis Odyssey appearing in the pages of Marvel’s Epic Illustrated. Beyond that initial serialized story, Dreadstar moved onto his own original graphic novel followed by a monthly under Marvel’s Epic banner followed by a series at First Comics and then a mini-series at Malibu.

And Aron isn’t the only one sporting a chubby for Big Jim. Oh no, Paul has a deep and abiding love for all things Thanos and the Infinity gems.

Brother Starlin teases a little news in this episode about Dreadstar… and Thanos and a certain movie project.

Join our unabashed geek love fest as we adore Jim Starlin.

It’s that time of year again – people start visiting family, baking Christmas cookies, all that happy holiday spirit stuff.  Which means it’s just about time for your two favorite podcasters (you know it’s true), Paul and Tim, to suggest the crap you should buy for the geek in your life this holiday season!  Along the way, we also chat about….

  • Casting comic book characters
  • Classic comic storyline tropes that we’d like to see again
  • Holiday gifts for your geek

We reference ThinkGeek multiple times in this podcast.

We’re big fans of Raven Gregory on Funnybooks.  We’ve spoken about his latest titles, Fly and The Theater, with much love because they’re just damn good books that you should definitely check out.

Sad thing, though?  We’ve never had Raven on the show.  We’ve only really been able to do interviews via e-mail due to his busy calendar.  Well…until now.

Raven and Paul get on the mic to discuss all of his latest goodies, including Fly, Theater, and Alice in Wonderland, the much anticipated prequel to his hugely successful Return to Wonderland trilogy.  Not only that, we get some exclusive news on The Waking 2, a sequel to a book that Raven never intended there to be a sequel to.  Plus, we chat about rum, and Raven realizes you can drop the f-bomb on our podcast about halfway into the interview.

Check it out!

So…yeah…we screwed up.  Wayne, Paul, and Tim recorded an episode of Funnybooks but, without Aron’s guidance…well, someone forgot to hit record.  Either that or upgrading our Skype screwed something up.  Or Gremlins did something.  More than likely it was Gremlins.  In chicken costumes.

Still, because we’re dedicated podcasting professionals (Well, Tim and Paul are anyway), we gave it another go, recording an instant classic of an episode!  Tim and Paul rock this joint, talking about such interesting crap as…

  • That bastard ass Skype Recording program
  • How Paul/Judas betrayed Aron and now they’ll never be “iPad buddies”
  • Digital Comics and how Tim’s a loser
  • Twilight and the losers who let their wives drag them to it. On opening day. Like Paul.
  • Some actual comics, like Justice League #3, Red Hood and the Outlaws #3, and Amazing Spider-Man #674
  • We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.  So make that happen, k?
Funnybooks with Paul and Tim.  It’s gotta be better than that new Nickelback album, right?

Aron is missing!  And Paulie, Tim and Wayne all decide to try their hands at intro-ing the show, Aron style.  Do they succeed?  Listen to find out!

  • Paul went to DC to play Uncharted 3
  • Extreme Studios Returns in 2012
  • Fear Itself is OVER!

NEW COMIC RELEASE SPOTLIGHT

  • Journey Into Mystery #629

  • Supergirl #2

It boggles my mind that there are websites that will give the recent The Thing prequel a negative review for repeating the beats of the John Carpenter original, but will give Paranormal Activity 3 a positive review.  Now don’t get me wrong, Paranormal 3 brings a good amount of scares and jumps, and is mostly successful, but the movie rips off everything from the old BBC TV movie Ghostwatch (worth seeking out) to Poltergeist, Halloween:The Curse of Michael Myers, and even the first two movies in the franchise.

The thing about PA3 is that it’s largely effective as a scary movie.  Until the last fifteen minutes, the film actually does a good job of racketing up tension and throwing a good jump scare at you every couple of minutes.  The problems with the movie actually don’t come from the acting or the scares, but from the very basics of the story and the direction.  It’s hard to go into too many details without spoiling things, so let’s talk a bit more after the jump, shall we?

Remember…SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP!

You know what they say?  Absence makes the heart grow fonder.  Never have those words been more true then in the case of Busch Gardens Tampa’s Howl-O-Scream.  I don’t mean to be harsh, but I’ve never been a big proponent of recycling haunted houses.  Recycling items in those houses, sure.  I understand that there needs to be a way to save money.  But, given that the event is a separate ticket event (you have to buy a ticket – you can’t just get in with a day pass), it seems to me like there should be enough money to at least re-theme the houses, with different actors or slight alterations.  Instead, both Busch Gardens parks (Tampa and Williamsburg) recycle entire houses with almost no changes, which makes for me second guessing the point of attending for, essentially, one or two new houses each year.  *review of 2009′s event here*

So…I skipped 2010′s event.  I really wanted to go, but the draw of Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter was stronger to me.  Not only that, the “chick band rock star” theme last year didn’t intrigue me as much as some of the previous year’s themes.  However, I think the break from the event helped me to enjoy this year even more. The official Avengers trailer is now online…and pretty badass.  I’ll save snarky nitpicks until after the trailer.

So…it does bug me a little that the first 30 seconds of the trailer make this seem a lot like a Transformers movie.  I was hoping for a better look at the Hulk, but I guess we’ll see more in the next trailer.  I mean, we’re still a while away from the film being released.  Oh, and the song selection, despite being a great song…really could have been something a little more recent.

Nitpicks aside, I’m actually pretty impressed by the trailer.  High hopes for this one.  Watch in HD at Apple.
