Welcome back, boils and ghouls, to a very special edition of PAUL’S HORROR FLIX! This week, you won’t have to venture to your local video store, or Amazon (or try to import something) to find the movies we’ll be chatting about – you just need to go to your local cinema! That’s right, we’re discussing theatrical horror this week, with two very different, but still very horrific, movies!
- The Wolfman
- The Crazies
Check out the reviews after the jump, and start saving up money for the matinee!
Free next Wednesday? And in Florida? Go meet DEADPOOL!
by Paul on Mar.08, 2010, under Comics, Marvel
And his writer, Daniel Way! Apparently, this sign also announces that, somehow, Hit-Monkey will also be there. How will this occur? F*ck if I know, but you know what? I’m going to find out!
That’s right folks! Next Wednesday, even more exciting than Daniel Way, Deadpool, and Hit-Monkey combined, no other than I, PAUL, will be in Florida, and you can be damn sure I can be seen at the event being held as A Comic Shop in Winter Park, Fl! Planning on being in the area? Let me know in the comments section below! And check out my last visit to A Comic Shop here!
Check out the new IRON MAN 2 Trailer!
by Paul on Mar.08, 2010, under Movies & TV, Superhero
I know…I really wish I had something snarky to say about this. I almost always do. But the only thing I really don’t like about these Iron Man 2 trailers is their use of the Black Sabbath son. I really kind of hate that song.
Lots of awesome fanboy moments – I wish they’d focus on Black Widow a little more (cuz she’s hot), but really, the appearance of the briefcase armor, the War Machine appearance…it’s all pretty kick ass. The appearance of a ton of Iron Man-type bots has me hopeful that they’re building up to us seeing some Hulkbuster armor in the eventual Avengers movie.
Iron Man is due out in theaters (and IMAX) on May 7. But not in 3D. Thank god.
DC Releases More Flash Goodies!
by Paul on Mar.04, 2010, under Comics, DC
Man, I am super excited about the upcoming Johns/Manapul relaunch of The Flash¸starting this April. And it looks like DC is too – they’re sending out tons of awesome preview art that really make this book look like a Flash we’ve never seen before. One thing we’ve been complaining about in books like Flash: Rebirth is that we don’t get that sense of speed that we should from a character like ol’ Barry Allen. Well, as the sketches below illustrate, Manapul’s looking very hard into correcting that.
Preview images:
Flash Fact: Some of the preview art above actually comes from The Flash: Secret Files and Origins, which is due out 3/24, and will feature Flash art by Manapul and Scott Kolins!
Also coming is a chance, from DC, to win a signed copy of the first issue, if you’re a Twitter follower!
Starting 4/7 and continuing during the week leading up to the release of THE FLASH #1, DC NATION’s Twitter account will be asking one Flash-related question a day. The first five Flash fans who correctly answer the question will be eligible to win a signed copy of one of DC’s biggest new launches of 2010. Think you’re an expert in all things Flash? Well, get ready to have your Scarlet Speedster knowledge tested, pal. Not only will I be bringing my years of Flash fandom to the task at hand, but I’ve enlisted the writer of THE FLASH himself, Mr. Geoff Johns to help me in crafting questions that will be far from simple.
We’ll announce all the legal goodies and rules on 4/7, the day before the contest actually launches. In the meantime, you can prep for the fun by signing up for a Twitter account if you don’t have one. Once that’s done, take a moment to start following DC NATION, THE FLASH writer Geoff Johns and artist Francis Manapul.

Check out THE EVIL DEAD on the big screen!
by Paul on Mar.01, 2010, under Horror, Movies & TV
If you’re in one of the lucky cities that Grindhouse Releasing has named for their EVIL DEAD theatrical tour! There are special midnight screenings happening right now across the country, on a 35mm print, so you’re getting probably the ultimate theatrical representation of this cinematic classic.
I know I bag on Sam Raimi a lot (deservedly so), but I love all three of the EVIL DEAD flicks, and I’d love to check out one of these dates if I can swing it. In fact, if you happen to live near Austin, they’re going to be showing a triple feature of all three EVIL DEAD flicks!
Check out all the info and tour dates here!
Brightest Day: The Flash #1 Preview
by Paul on Mar.01, 2010, under Blackest Night, Comics, DC
So, I guess the Blackest Night really does precede the Brightest Day, doesn’t it? We spoke on this week’s Funnybooks (listen now dammit) about the bad taste in our mouth by The Flash: Rebirth, easily a worst contender for worst series in 2009/2010 (right up there with Captain America: Reborn). The series, written by my favorite comics writer EVER, Geoff Johns, not only managed to brutalized me, Last House on the Left – style, but also managed to make me sit in a corner, rocking myself to sleep while cutting myself. It’s that bad. You’d think Grant Morrison wrote it.
Anyway (listen to Funnybooks for my full rage-induced review), the Brightest Day of the DC Universe may also bring a much-needed return to the type of Flash stories we love to read (Rogue’s Revenge and Blackest Night: The Flash, also by Johns, were excellent recent Flash tales) in the form of the new ongoing series The Flash, with story by Johns and art by his Adventure Comics collaborator, Francis Manapul.
The Flash #1, due out 4/14, is the first part of “The Dastardly Death of the Rogues,” a title which, hopefully, does not mean the death of some of my favorite characters in comics! DC’s Source Blog released a preview of the series and, if these pages are any indication of the whole, we’re going to be in for a real treat this April! Check out the preview by clicking any of the images below!
Last Man Standing: Who Will Be Captain America?
by Paul on Feb.24, 2010, under Marvel, Movies & TV, Superhero
But the real question is…should any of them wield the shield? According to AICN, the following eligible bachelors are in line to take on the mantle of the Star Spangled Avenger.
- Chace Crawford (GOSSIP GIRL)
- John Krasinski (THE OFFICE)
- Scott Porter (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS)
- Mike Vogel (CLOVERFIELD)
- Michael Cassidy (Lots o’ TV)
- Patrick Flueger (BROTHERS and THE 4400)
- Garrett Hedlund (TRON LEGACY)
First of all, I have to say….John Krasinski? F*ckin’ really? Who the hell thought that was a good idea? And what happened to Captain Awesome (Ryan McPartlin), from Chuck? As for the remaining choices, I’m not entirely familiar with any of them either. Scott Porter seems like a decent choice, as does Chace Crawford (though I don’t see him as pulling off the muscle-bound Cap).
What say you?
Paul’s Horror Flix: DOGHOUSE/CABIN FEVER (Director’s Cut)
by Paul on Feb.24, 2010, under Horror, Movies & TV
Another week, another all-new, all-awesome edition of PAUL’S HORROR FLIX! As promised, I’m back with a double dose of horror this week, and I decided to step up my game a little bit – sure, last week’s Demonic Toys 2 and Road to L had a small droplet of the red stuff, but this week’s contenders poured on ample amounts of what we like to see in our horror flicks – chunky, gooey, dripping blood and guts!
The two contenders this week are Cabin Fever: The Director’s Cut, out now on blu-ray, and Doghouse (currently only available on import DVD). How do they measure up? Find out after the jump!
