Your Morning Head: All You Can Eat

by Aron on Mar.03, 2010, under Food, Your Morning Head

sweet tomatoesCUE: OCD Old Man Rant

I’m not much on the all you can eat buffet.

Sure, when I was 20 years old nothing excited me more than a pizza buffet.  I remember once, when complaining to Mama at Mama’s Pizza that more pizza was needed on the hot table, she told me I’d had enough.  I had to emphasize to her that it was not all she could eat.  Rather, it was all I could eat.

But those days are long gone.

Unless you’re visiting some uptown Sunday morning brunch, most of the food on a buffet is quantity over quality.  Not so at Sweet Tomatoes (aka Soup Plantation). I love the selection.  Fresh salads, wide variety of soup, potato bar, fresh breads… Yummy, healthy choices!

My experience last night will keep me from ever visiting there again. (continue reading…)

Podge Cast Luke to attend Fear the Con 3!

by Aron on Mar.01, 2010, under Conventions, Podcasts, Role Playing Games

luke-2009There are those who believed it’d be a cold day in Hell before Luke Meyer returned to another Fear the Boot event.  You may have noticed, there’s been a lot of snow this winter…

Heard on Twitter yesterday, Luke Meyer, formerly of Fear the Boot and currently of The Podge Cast, announced that he would indeed be accepting the invitation from FtB’s moderating host Dan Repperger to attend Fear the Con 3.

He stated: “”Excited to report I will be attending Fear the Con 3. Woot!”

When asked about his plans for the event, “I’ll be running copious amount of Iron Tyrants.”

Iron Tyrants is the miniature wargame Meyer is developing with frequent collaborator A. David Pinilla.

Luke was instrumental to the coordination and success of the first Fear the Con.  A beloved figure in the RPG podcast community, Luke’s presence at FtC3 is eagerly anticipated.

Almost as much as his next Wizard Sleeve column.

Your Morning Head: Racists on a Plane

by Aron on Mar.01, 2010, under Columns, Role Playing Games, Savage Worlds, Your Morning Head

kkk2On a business trip last week whiling away time in my hotel room, I was pleased to find that the newest supplement for Ken Hite’s Savage World setting, The Day After Ragnarok, had been released.  I’m a big fan of DAR.  I’ve written about it a lot. Without hesitation, I eagerly downloaded the PDF, Serpent Scales: Fragments from the World after Serpentfall #1.

Bonus: one of the perks at the hotel was free printing in the business center, so I printed it up (plus a whole lot of other PDFs obtained from DriveThruRPG’s Haiti relief program).  Stuffing Serpent Scales in my bag, I had my reading material for the flight home.

The Day After Ragnarok is set in the days after World War II when Jormungandr was felled by America’s atom bomb.  The World Serpent collapsed across the hemispheres, its venom poisoning the Earth, ruining nationes, giving rise to monsters the world over.  The first issue of Serpent Scales provides details on The New Konfederacy…

Rebuilding the nation from the wreckage.

Rebuilding it in strength and unity.

Rebuilding it free of taint and corrupt blood.

Rebuilding it into a beacon of faith and protection.

Surely everyone can agree with that plan. But the devil is in the details: the nation they rebuild is the Confederacy, or worse. The strength and unity they seek are tyranny and conformity. The blood they would purge is that of their fellow Americans. Their beacon is a flaming cross.

They are the Night Riders, the Army of the New Konfederacy, the Invisible Empire. They are the resurgent Ku Klux Klan. (continue reading…)

by Aron on Feb.25, 2010, under Comics, Funny Books with Aron & Paulie, Marvel, New Comic Book Day Interviews, Podcasts

fb2010_parker2aFULL DISCLOSURE: This is our second recording with Agents of Atlas Writer Jeff Parker.  Our first interview with Jeff was awesome covering the full span of his admirable body of work.  Where can you download that episode you ask?  No where, that’s where!

Due to a colossal failure of technology and technician, we lost that episode (aka FailCast).  Fortunately, Jeff Parker returned for a second review.  And this time, we pushed RECORD.

THE SHOW: We talk about all kinds of cool stuff such as Fall of the Hulks, Agents of Atlas, The Uranian, reprints in Marvel Comics, sad comic conventions, the value of new ideas, Portland, mustaches, DC vs Marvel, Doctor Rape, his Image comic Underground and Parker’s upcoming stint as college professor.  And much, much more.

This interview was one of the most enjoyable we’ve done.  Parker’s a hoot.  Thanks for your patience, Professor Parker.

Missed Olympic Opportunity, You Hosers!

by Aron on Feb.23, 2010, under Movies & TV

bndIs it just me or are the Olympics missing out on what would have been AMAZING commentary from Canada’s biggest luminaries, Bob and Doug McKenzie?  I’d much prefer to get my Olympic minute from these guys rather than Bob Costas and Al Michaels.  I mean, those dudes are great, but whatta’ they know about beer and back bacon or how to get a free case of beer by slipping a mouse into the beer bottle?

I should totally be producing these Olympics, eh?  I mean, dig this… they could sing their own theme song (with Getty Lee from Rush!).  Quality and economy from the McKenzie boys!

Last seen in the Great White North

by Aron on Feb.23, 2010, under Comics

andrew-koenig1Andrew Koenig, son of Star Trek’s Walter Koenig (TV’s Chekhov), has gone missing.  He was last seen more than a week ago.  Andrew Koening, who played “Boner” opposite Kirk Cameron on Growing Pains, was visiting friends in Canada and was last seen in the Vancouver area.

Walter Koenig has stated his son suffers from depression.

According to TMZ, Andrew Koenig is  the camera operator on the podcast “Never Not Funny.” Producer-director-writer Lance Miccio, who said he’d worked with Andrew several times, told TMZ that Koenig had passed on a project Miccio had discussed with him two weeks ago, saying he “wasn’t going to work anymore.”

I know you’re thinking what I’m thinking.

Canada.  Missing man.

Put it together.

That’s right…

Coffman vs. Kurtz… some more

by Aron on Feb.22, 2010, under Web Comics

scott

Kurtz

PVP Online’s Scott Kurtz has been answering questions over on FormSpring.  Over the weekend, he answered a question about the drama between he and Hero By Night and Yirmumah creator D. J. Coffman:

Well, it’s a stupid mess isn’t it? All petty fights are. From my perspective, DJ worked as a cartoonist for a long time, even self-syndicating without anything he made ever really taking off.

Then he hooked his cart to Platinum, left himself no possible graceful exit, and now he’s just kind of floundering a bit, looking for some kind of relevance.

Right now the biggest thing he’s got going is not liking me. So he occasionally makes a big show of that when he thinks it will serve him.

But I personally believe that is the extent of his skills.

djcoffman

Coffman

Coffman saw the comment and responded thus on Twitter:

“Someone linked me to Scott Kurtz talking about me on formspring to get my reaction. It still is I think that guy is an unhealthy hot mess.

“Unhealthy meaning not only physically but mentally.”

For those needing a refresher, Kurtz and Coffman have been sparring with each other for a couple of years.  Here’s more on the subject from Occasional Superheroine.
